Survey Background • Apr. 2003 - Situation Assessment released • May 2003 - UBCM Library Task Force (LTF) formed • July 2003 - LTF administers member survey • Aug. 2003 - LTF synthesizes survey responses • Sep. 2003 - LTF submits response to MCAWS • Sep. 2003 - LTF hosts Public Libraries Clinic

  3. Survey Goals • To gather local government input on the Province’s development of a strategic plan for public libraries in BC. • To use this input as the basis for a response to the provincial government’s strategic planning process.

  9. Main Recurring Themes • Preserve free basic access. • Encourage cooperative relationships. • Continue valuable PLSB programs. • Increase provincial funding. • Ensure rural access to high-speed Internet.

  10. Main Recurring Themes • Standardize minimum service levels. • Library Act should be more “enabling”. • Introduce a province-wide library card. • Re-invest in K-12 school libraries.

  11. Conclusions • Local government responses largely echo the findings of the Zethof Situation Assessment. • Local governments want the strategic plan for BC public libraries to reflect current realities and focus on enhancing efficiencies in library service provision.
