  1. The left hand of darkness

  2. What changes have we seen in the main characters? • What countries and/or governments do the two main places remind you of? • Karhide • Orgoreyn • Why do you think they wanted to prevent kemmer? • More importantly, why did they give the anti-kemmer drugs to Genly when they clearly knew he was different?!? • What info do you think the interrogators hoped to learn, and why was it so important t questions

  3. Desire for change and unity: Estraven has sacrificed his career and personal welfare trying to encourage the government officials to accept the Ekumen’s offer. He hopes this will propel unity and growth and sees the wisdom in expanding their communication and trade options. Loyalty: Estraven feels terrible that Genly has ended up imprisoned and sacrifices himself even more in order to rescue him. Cultural communication barriers: Estraven and Genly finally realize that the contention between them is due to misunderstandings in their communication. Change: "Tibe wants to teach Karhide how to lie. But I think we shall have trouble learning how to lie, having for so long practiced the art of going round and round the truth without ever lying.“ (162) themes

  4. Conflict:Genly is arrested and sent to a work farm, a type of punishment for political prisoners. He thought he was building friendships and making progress towards achieving his goals and is very surprised to be woken up and carted off. Shifting narrative structure: The entire book is written from varying perspectives by different authors. In our section the chapters alternate between the voices of Genly and Estraven. Literary techniques

  5. Of the sections we have read so far, this has been the most enlightening and informative. We have finally gotten to know more about Estraven and his motivations behind his actions. Also, we learn a lot concerning the type of government and people controlling Orgoreyn. "I have taken up the old disciplines I learned in Rotherer" (162) critiques
