  1. Welcome to Badgers class 2019/20 Class teachers – Mr Day & Mrs Elkington Class assistant – Mrs Marsh

  2. What have we learned from last year? Our priorities are to maintain the breadth of opportunities for cross-curricular learning, whilst maintaining the academic levels we have achieved. Why? Child self-esteem and preparation for secondary School.

  5. “First drafts don’t have to be perfect, they just have to be written” • Following the success of our writing moderation and the focus on encouraging the children to be free and creative writers who make informed choices , we are keen not to replicate, but further develop this ethos. • How will this happen? • A partnership approach between us and you. Encouragement is critical and ‘you are what you read’ is more often than not true. • Stop, drop and write – an opportunity to be continued at home? • Reading to and with you child gives them an advantage in communication as a whole. • Reading and discussing books and vocabulary is critical to your child’s development – not only as a writer, but more importantly a communicator and the requirement to be an effective communicator is increasing greatly.

Help with homework… • The aims: • Develop responsibility and independence. • Help children consolidate learning. • Demonstrate to you, their abilities and engage you in their learning. • Maths - out Weds/Thursday, due back in on Wednesday – awaiting new scheme to arrive. This should be independently completed by the child. • Brain barometer – Children will have skills they will need to practise to progress, please build this into your weekly plan. • Spellings – weekly tests on a Friday with Mrs Elkington (spelling sheets for half term in English homework book). Children asked to work smart and not hard and to experiment with the techniques we will be sharing with them, in order to find the way that suits them best. • WHY LEARN TO SPELL IT IF YOU CANNOT USE IT? • Reading– 4 x per week, book and summary activity completed by child and only countersigned by an adult. • English/Topic/creative – Ad hoc as driven by topic.

  7. Aim: to develop life-long learning skills and INDEPENDENCE through the development of a growth mindset. How do we feel when we are met with a new learning CHALLENGE?

Stationary • Children are encouraged to use their own pencil case and stationary however, this is not essential. • Recent trend and one which we have seen positive benefits from is the use of ‘Frixion’ pens. This allows children to edit as they write and remain positive about their presentation. • Sainsburys - 3 for £5. • All pens must use blue ‘ink’ and not be a biro.

Maths • Raise in expectation – focus to be ‘expected’ not ‘below’. • Age focussed planning agewith stretch for ‘greater depth’. • Focus on: Arithmetic – four operations (20/30 in SAT) Problem solving in real life contexts. • Weekly brain barometer – progress expected. • Half-termly assessment’s – mirrored SAT’s scores for past 2 cohorts so a great guage. • Homework & support key. • Intervention timetabled as required – wave 1,2 and 3.

  14. English • Termly coverage – fiction, non-fiction & poetry. • Focus on developing ‘writer freedom’, stamina and editing/polishing/up-levelling. • Focus on grammar through separate GPaS sessions only if required. • Intervention timetabled as required – wave 1,2 and 3.

  15. Topic London - Cross curricular – geography, history, art, DT and music. French – Mrs Pickford (Wednesday) ICT – Incorported into curriculum lessons PE – Monday and Thursday (weather dependant) - PE kit needs to be in everyday Science – Fridays with Mrs Elkington Music – Ukulele - Thursdays

  16. Communication • Classroom open door policy – where possible. Before School is not a great time. • Medicine – form should be completed (Mrs Haysham or Mrs Marsh). • Signing children in and out of school. • Letter – class box. • P.E. – Absence from P.E. requires a note.

  17. Safeguarding and e-safety • It is so important to monitor your child’s usage. • Sleep impact • Facebook – age 13 • Whats-app How closed are groups? Would you say it to their face? • Musical-ly, TikTok and other sites

  18. Where do I find? • The best place to find factual School information is on the website. • Facebook is great for us to communicate photos and celebrate but, do not rely on it for all updates. • Governor profiles etc
