  1. Work Package "Fibre Procurement and Quality Assurance" Status, plans and issues Aachen, CERN, Dortmund, Heidelberg, Russia Diam. scan Att. Length Scint. 2. Current assumption: • All (~10 000 km) SciFi fibres are centrally purchased, tested and distributed to (~3-5) mat winding sites. • Considered suppliers • Kuraray (JP) • Saint Gobain (FR/US) • ELJEN technology (US) • It appears that only Kuraray SCSF-78-MJ (Ø 0.25 mm) is close enough to our desired specifications (LHCb-PUB-2014-019 summarises our prel. specs.) • However, also for the SCSF-78MJ fibre, there are still issues which affect hit precision, detection efficiency and production yield: • Uniformity of fibre diameter, minimisation of bump frequency (bump = diam. > 275 mm) • Attenuation length • Scintillation Light Yield • Radiation damage (at low dose, <1 kGy). Tests being prepared at HD, CERN and DO. Talk by Cesare Alfieri Christian Joram CERN PH/DT 15 September 2014

  3. TDR performance numbers are based on 'old' fibres purchased in 2010/2011 (AC, DO, ?). • 100 km fibres purchased in Nov 2013, Lots 13112101-08 • Lower than expected att. length (~3m instead of ~4 m). • Higher than expected bump size and frequency. Ø up to 1.3 mm. Frequency >1 bump/km. Discovered that Kuraray test missed many bumps. • 50 km fibres received in Aug 2014, Lots 14080801-06 • Even lower att. length (~2.6 m) • Still high bump size and bump frequency (f ~2/km) acc. to Kuraray • Scint. LY  see Cesare's talk • Further 100 km are on order, but the precise specifications and delivery dates will only be fixed after full analysis of Aug 2014 batch. • We also received some samples (~km length) of SCSF-78 fibres with different WLS concentrations  see Cesare's talk • You find an ~up-to-date inventory of all SciFi fibres at https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/LHCb/FiberInventory Christian Joram CERN PH/DT 15 September 2014

  4. Spectral shifter Е L activator (α, βorγ- radiation) L= 1 - 2 nm << R Patent RU 2380726 (2010) For the time being only a side line: Nanostructured Organosiliconluminophores (NOLs) (Institute of Synthetic Polymeric Materials, S. Ponomarenko) Chemical coupling of activator and WLS molecules increases scintillation yield. Light output is 90-120% of that of anthracene , i.e. 50% higher than in standard plastic scintillator (like BC-408) • Kuraray and ISPM are about to sign a NDA which will allow Kuraray to buy some of this material and process it to fibres for test. We will act as performance evaluators. • Hope to get first fibres still before the end of the year. Christian Joram CERN PH/DT 15 September 2014

  5. Visit to Kuraray fibre factory in Niigata on 6 Oct 2014 (C. Joram, T. Nakada, A. Schopper, U. Uwer) Agenda to be defined, but obvious points are - SciFi minimum specs and wish list - discussion of current quality and development plan - commercial scenario for large scale order (cost, delivery plan) - quality assurance, quality categories - communication, documentation We will be able to visit the production facility. Christian Joram CERN PH/DT 15 September 2014

  6. Building a new fibre QA machine for CERN tensioner Cleaning (missing) Node detector LASER micrometer feeder Cladding Test (missing) Francois Garnier, P-A Guidici H. Esser In parallel to mechanical work at CERN, Aachen prepares all electrical equipment (motors, controllers, cladding test, …). Set-up may go to AC end of September for el. installation and commissioning. Machine will be installed in a semi-clean lab at CERN (B 108). First measurements still in 2014.
