  2. Infinitives • There are three types of infinitives in Spanish: -AR, -ER, and -IR • The most common are -AR verbs. • To use -AR verbs in a sentence you have to conjugate them into the right tense.

  3. Definitions for Conjugation: Infinitive – the basic form of the verb; In English: to + an action (to speak, to need, to look for, to buy.) In Spanish: an action + ar (hablar, necesitar, buscar, comprar.) Conjugate – to change the verb from infinitive form to a form that matches the subject. Each subject will use a different verb ending. Stem – the part of the infinitive after you drop the -ar infinitive ending. This part contains the meaning of the verb. (habl-necesit-, busc-, compr-.) Endings: Spanish verbs require a different set of endings. The endings will indicate what subject is doing the action.

  4. -AR verb endings: Yo -o Nosotros -amos Tú -as Vosotros -áis Él -a Ellos -an Ella -a Ellas -an Usted -a Ustedes -an

Conjugation: • To conjugate the verb aplastar cucarachas, which means to squash roaches, you would remove the -ar infinitive ending and replace it with the appropriate verb ending. • Stem = aplast- (add endings to aplast-) Yo aplasto cucarachas. Tú aplastas cucarachas. Él aplasta cucarachas. Ella aplasta cucarachas. Usted aplasta cucarachas. Nosotros aplastamos cucarachas. Vosotros aplastáis cucarachas. Ellos aplastan cucarachas. Ellas aplastan cucarachas. Ustedes aplastan cucarachas.
