  3. Agenda • Update on status of each experimental phase of project. • Enhance collaborative activities. • Computational models. • Integration of data issues into experimental plan. • Integration of educational and research activities.

  4. Prototype Structure • Continuous reinforced concrete bridge with drilled shaft foundations and varying column heights • Prototype driven by shaking table model • Representative of bridges in California, Nevada, and Washington

  5. Shaking Table Tests • Design nearly complete • Additional mass being discussed • Structural drawings under development

  6. Field Tests • Identified site in Austin • Preliminary soil properties

  7. Field Tests • Used structural plans from shaking table • Test matrix: • Two isolated shafts • Two bents

  8. 3'-0" 12" 10'-0" 6'-3"

  9. Structural Component Tests • Two bents at quarter scale • Three columns at half scale • Experimental parameters: • Amount of transverse reinforcement • Aspect ratio of column

  10. Centrifuge Tests

  11. Communication within Project • Use of UTNEESPOP • Archiving Design Documents • Video Conferencing • Schedule Regular Meetings

  12. Computational Modeling • Evaluation of prototype. • Prediction of experimental response • Prediction of response from centrifuge needed as input for shaking table. • Verification of computational models using experimental data. • Comprehensive study of prototype using verified models.

  13. Data Issues

  14. Integration of Educational Activities

  15. Project Schedule • Field Tests • Site characterization: ongoing • Construction: spring • Testing: spring and summer • Shaking Table Tests • Design: ongoing • Construction bids: spring • Testing: September

  16. Project Schedule • Structural Tests • Design: ongoing • Construction: spring and summer • Testing: fall • Centrifuge Tests • Design: ongoing • Testing: first container – end of summer

  17. Outreach Activities • OpenSees Workshop • Poster – EERI Annual Meeting • Poster and Paper – 13WCEE

  18. Outreach Activities (Proposal) • Solicit input on design of experiments. • Encourage development of complementary projects. • Organize prediction challenges. • Present at professional meetings.

  19. Possible Piggyback Projects • Develop T-Rex for centrifuge • Shake surface of soil in centrifuge to compare with field data • Structural shakers for field • Compare structural excitation with ground excitation • Small-scale column tests • Enhance parameter study • Add pipe to shaking table specimen • New sensors for centrifuge or field tests
