  2. 27 Entonces verán venir al Hijo del hombre en una nube, con gran poder y majestad: 28 Cuando estas cosas comiencen a suceder, pongan atención y levanten la cabeza, porque se acerca la hora de su liberación. 34 Estén alerta, para que los vicios, con el libertinaje, la embriaguez y las preocupaciones de esta vida no entorpezcan su mente y aquel día los sorprenda desprevenidos;

  4. Luke21:25-28, 34-36 25 Jesus said to his disciples: “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

  5. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.” 34 “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise

  6. 35 like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. 36 Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.” Gospel of the Lord

  7. Reflections on Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 Reflexiones en Lucas 21:25-28, 34-36 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Dec. 2, 2012 This is the First Sunday of Advent. Remember that the word apocalypse means it half reveals, half conceals. What you bring to it is important. It will determine your reaction. If you are living a good and holy life, this reading will be a consolation. If you are not walking in the straight and narrow path that leads to salvation, this reading will strike you with horror and disgrace.

  9. It can be frightening to think about the second coming of Christ our Lord. Remember that in love there is no fear. Perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18). Some interpret the readings literally, and point to the destruction of Jerusalem (A.D. 67) as a fulfillment.

  11. (Luke was written after that happened, in the 80’s.) St. Augustine saw the sack of Rome in the fifth century as a sign of the Lord’s coming. Maximus of Turin saw every subsequent war as a sign that the end is coming near and that the kingdom of God is even closer at hand.

  13. The early Fathers of the Church help us to get the spiritual sense of the message. St. Ambrose (Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 10:36-37) says that when the signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars are mentioned, it means that very many will fall away from religion, a cloud of unbelief will darken bright faith. He says: “For me that heavenly Sun is either diminished or increased by my faith”.

  15. In Malachia 4:2 it says, “For you who fear my name the Sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go forth leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.”

  17. The “Sun of righteousness” has been born; his name is Jesus Christ. However, there is nothing to be afraid of. Rather, consider the fact that when he was on earth he acted by going about doing good, healing those who were sick: lepers were cleansed, the eyes of the blind were healed; paralytics leaped up and walked.

  19. The “wings” remind us of the Holy Spirit. He instructed the Apostles on Pentecost day, and instructs all of us beginning at the moment of baptism. And He will be there in the future to instruct us, as we are able to bear it (John 16:13). Pray for the gift of healing.

  21. Elaborating on the idea that Jesus will come in the clouds of heaven, St. Ambrose points out that “Some clouds cover the radiance of the heavenly mystery. Some clouds grow moist with the dew of spiritual grace”. Isaiah 45:8 has the same idea of the grace of God coming down from heaven like dew. “Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation may sprout forth.”

  23. God spoke to the people of God “in a pillar of cloud” (Psalm 99:7). God comes in a calm cloud in the Song of Songs, shining with the joy of a bridegroom (Song 3:6).

  24. St. Augustine says Jesus will come in the church as in a cloud. He continues to come in this way according to his word. He comes with great power and majesty giving the saints power to overcome the temptations of the last days.

  26. Notice that the gospel gets very practical. It is important to be vigilant at all times, and pray much. “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap.”

  28. There are 22 million addicts in the USA that are hooked on drugs. They need to hear this message and be healed. They probably need specially prepared counselors who can walk them through decisions they need to make, so that they can understand themselves and be freed from their compulsions and walk the walk with Jesus.

  30. So it is all about keeping the heart alert to his coming. A good spirituality is one that has regular hours for formal prayer, such as the Holy Rosary, and Holy Mass. It also means keeping the Lord in mind at all times. “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; and pray for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ. Conduct yourself wisely… making the most of the time. Let your speech be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer every one” (Colossians 4:2-6).

  32. Advent is a beautiful time to live in such a way as to please our good God who loves us. It is a time to be watchful in prayer as we await the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray that we be ready for his coming everyday and on Christmas Day.
