  2. Overview • General introduction: EUFETEC • Results of international questionnaire • Way forward • Discussion

  3. 1. General introduction: EUFETEC

  4. Core Business = FEED • Compound feed • Premixtures • Feed additives • Feed materials (incl. byproducts) • Pet Food • Other related branches (milling industry, machine building,…)

  5. FEED & LIVESTOCK in EU 40 % 152 billion €

  6. FEED & LIVESTOCK in EU • Feed is the • most significant cost factor • Impact in quality and safety of milk, meat and eggs (Food). • * Valorization of byproducts from food and non-food

  7. FEED & LIVESTOCK in EU ■ 470 million T of feed ■ The European feed industry (excl. pet food) offers direct employment for app. 100,000 people in ± 4000 plants (SME).

  8. EUFETEC Mission To support FEED sector-bound and FEED sector-steered technological innovation through an integrated approach : Competitive EU Feed industry, for consumers, farmers and other industries Harmonized Practical guidelines / Practical implementation / Research Training Service provision

  9. EUFETEC Objective • To become a world-wide acknowledged EU reference center for research, training and service provision in the FEED sector, with strategic Brussels as head quarter. HOW ? Through cooperation between various partners

  10. EUFETEC Structure Key Stakeholders • Feed Industry BEMEFA (BE), FRANA / FEFANA (BE / EU), CESFAC(S) • Academic communityAUGent/ILVO (BE), Wageningen UR (NL), Piacenza (IT), Nottingham (UK) • Research centers TECALIMAN (F), IFF (DE), FINS(SRB) Key Observer FEFAC (EU)

  11. EUFETEC Structure • COUNCIL • BEMEFA • FINS • FRANA / FEFANA • IFF • UAGent / ILVO • TECALIMAN • Univ. of Nottingham • Univ. of Piacenza • Univ. of Wageningen • WORKING GROUPS • Sustainable feed & Environment • Feed & Food Quality and Safety • Production Unit Management • Communication, Technology transfer and Training EUROPEAN TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS • OBSERVER • FEFAC SECRETARIAT 1.5 p ; Brussels

  12. EUFETEC Objective Contribute to : • Safe & high-quality food products 130 mio T milk 45 mio T meat 7 mio T eggs • Societal responsibility Sustainable feed Environment friendly (N in water ; ammonia in air ; feed conversion) Valorization of various by-products (food and fuel) • Integrated production process (farm-to-fork) • Competitive European feed industry

  13. EUFETEC Strategy • Call as much as possible on existing know-how and infrastructures; • Ensure optimal use of existing resources and to avoid duplication as far as possible; • Enhance cooperation and attract resources; • Respects the intellectual property and know-how of every stakeholder; • Bundle the financial input as far as possible based on know-how; • Harmonize output as much as possible in an operational way;

  14. 2. Results of international questionnaire

  15. Objective • Keep finger on the pulse > sector driven • Questionnaires among members http://www.eufetec.eu • Brainstorming sessions (15/5/2008 – Brussels) Innovativesolutions to which problems ?

  16. Themes Innovative solutions to which problems ? EU-basis

  17. PfF - EUFETEC

  18. 248 respondents: Production of (feed) additives (F) : 34 Production of premixtures (P): 34 Production of compound feed (CF): 180 Countries Results F/P/CF F/P/CF

  19. Results : general “A structural and sustainable cooperation at EU level between the different stakeholders of the feed chain, research centers and the academic community in the area of research, service provision and training is:”

  20. Results : Feed & Food Quality and Safety “Residues of coccidiostats or medicated feed in feed for non-target animals are a problem to your activities as feed producer:” “In the short term, in the EU there is a need for maximum limits or action limits for residues of coccidiostats or medicated feed in feed for non-target animals as well as in end products (milk, egg and meat). The limits should be consistent with each other.”

  21. Results : Production Unit Management Energy Management “The international evolution of energy prices (oil, electricity, gas,...) can be a threat to your activities as feed producer: “ “To map out the use of energy in your company and to introduce some measures to rationalize and optimize this is:”

  22. Results : Production Unit Management “There is a need for a uniform EU protocol in order to determine cross contamination and homogeneity in facilities where feed is produced:” Employee occupational health “Do you manage to implement the legislation regarding employee occupational health in your company?” Dust explosion “Do you manage to implement the legislation regarding dust explosion (zoning, documentation regarding protection against dust explosion) in your company?”

  23. Results : Sustainable Feed & Environment Alternative feed ingredients “The international evolution of prices of feed materials (soy, cereals, …) can be a threat to your activities as feed producer: “ “Because of the international evolution of feed material prices, by-products of the biofuel industry (DDGS, glycerol) and other alternative feed materials will play a more prominent role in the feed formula in the short term: “

  24. “A better access to GM feedstuffs is:“ Results : Sustainable Feed & Environment Alternative feed ingredients (2) “A controlled relaxation of the restriction on the use of fishmeal and of the prohibition to use processed animal proteins in feed for food-producing animals is:“

  25. Summary of results 1st priority = 3 points, 2nd priority = 2 points ; 3rd priority = 1 point

  26. 3. Way forward

  27. Finalization of (1st edition of) EUFETEC Vision Document; • Increase the “visibility” of EUFETEC at European level • Communicate FEED (and livestock) research priorities to EC (e.g. FP 8); • Interact with European Technology Platforms (ETP’s) • Animal Task Force • BECOTEPS

  28. Increase the “visibility” of EUFETEC, also at national levels • EUFETEC Lecture Tours : research dissemination and interaction with feed business operators • Participation in FP 7 calls : • Field2Trough (Sustainable food and feed processing - KBBE-2009-2-3-03) • BENEFEED (Food Quality & Safety – KBBE-2010-2-4-03) • ASTER (KBBE-2010-1-4-01)

  29. Contribute to EU policy objectives : • Providing companies with tools to comply with feed safety legislation (HACCP, homogeneity tests, carry-over tests, etc.); • Developing feed industry standards / self checking; • Completing the scientific background in certain areas; • Contributing to improve the sustainability of EU agriculture through valorization of by-products and to improve  the environmental impact of animal products through their life cycle;
