  1. Topic sentence Leads! A preview to your paper…

  2. What am I writing about? • You readers needs to know what the topic of your paper is! Otherwise…they get confused and lose interest!

  3. Topic: About my family… • Have you ever wondered what makes family? Well I have, and I can’t think of a better family member than my super dad…Bill. • Family is something we all have, and my loveable dad is the greatest anyone can ask for. • My dad is very important to me!

  4. Topic: What makes you happy… • The day I raced my wooden car and won, was the happiest day of my life. • I was so delighted when my car crossed the finish line first. This was the best day of my life. • The happiest day was when I won the race.

  5. Topic: Tell us about a special present to you… • I thought it was the most special present in the world. I mean, who wouldn’t want an Optimus Prime action figure for their 10th birthday? • The most special present to me was one I received on my seventh birthday. It was a hush puppy and I loved it. • The most special present to me was a Nintendo Wii!

  6. Hook, line, and sinker • Fishing for details…

  7. Example 1: • Laughter, enjoyment, and a stress free lifestyle. The bright yellow sun was scorching hot, but the refreshing water splashing in my face kept me cool. Oh, what I wouldn’t do to live here all my life.

  8. Example 1: • Laughter, enjoyment, and a stress free lifestyle. The bright yellow sun was scorching hot, but the refreshing water splashing in my face kept me cool. Oh, what I wouldn’t do to live here all my life. Of all the wet and wild places, Water World is the most amazing place to visit.

  9. Example 2 • I hear clapping, but couldn’t see the audience as the spot light wrapped around and blinded my face. Still, I knew the play was over. I…JakobNezbeda pulled off a miracle I never thought I could do.

  10. Example 2 • I hear clapping, but couldn’t see the audience as the spot light wrapped around and blinded my face. Still, I knew the play was over. I…JakobNezbeda pulled off a miracle I never thought I could do. After all, remembering all the lines for a lead character, and not goofing up is a pretty big deal for a ten year old.

  11. Example 3 • I’ve heard stories…more like nightmares about people falling in and never getting out. Some even say that you’re never the same again. You have to be brave, but the deceitful water rushed and roared like the beast. Once it gets you, it tries to pull you under, throw you around like a rag doll, and makes sure to leave your body battered and bruised. Briskly cold, calm at times, deadly at others, even our fearless leader had panic in her eyes at times.

Once it gets you, it tries to pull you under, throw you around like a rag doll, and makes sure to leave your body battered and bruised. Briskly cold, calm at times, deadly at others, even our fearless leader had panic in her eyes at times. Yup, white water rafting was a difficult challenge for me, and boy was it ever tough for my wife.

  13. Example 4: • The sun was bright and baking me like an egg. The pavement only reflected the heat. Sweat rolled down my forehead, blocking my sight temporarily as I brushed back the tears made of sweat. Across from me were three other opponents and many more in line licking their chops to get a shot at me. I plan my move, looking for the weak link. Then, I notice one not paying attention and go in for the kill. I slowly drop the green wall ball, it makes a thud, bounces back up, and I fire. At recess, wall-ball is my world.
