  1. HOPI Update - Internet 2 ProjectHybrid Optical Packet Infrastructure Peter O’Neil NCAB May 19, 2004

  2. I2 Looking to the Future • Examine alternative infrastructures for the future • likely to see a rich set of switched optical paths • Basic IP packet switched networks • A set of optically switched lambdas available for dynamic provisioning for discipline specific networks. • Basic Question: What will be the core architecture for the future Abilene? • Examining a Hybrid of shared IP packet switching and dynamically provisioned optical lambdas

  3. Regional Optical Initiatives • California (CALREN) • Colorado/Wyoming/Utah (FRGP/BRAN) • Connecticut (Connecticut Education Network) • Florida (Florida LambdaRail) • Indiana (I-LIGHT) • Illinois (I-WIRE) • Maryland, D.C. & northern Virginia (MAX) • Michigan • Minnesota • New York + New England region (NEREN) • North Carolina (NC LambdaRail) • Ohio (Third Frontier Network) • Oregon • Rhode Island (OSHEAN) • SURA Crossroads (southeastern U.S.) • Texas • Utah • Wisconsin

  4. Abilene - Leased Sonet Network

Also the CENIC SVL- Sacramento (SAC) ELH route will become part of NLR SVL-SEA in exchange for a SVL-SAC LH route NLR is building (not shown here).

  6. NLR & Abilene Networks

  7. HOPI Questions • Problems to understand • Future architectures? • Temporal degree of manual vs. dynamic provisioning? • Topological extent of deterministic provisioning? • Examine backbone, RON, campus hierarchy – how will a RON interface with the core network? • Understand connectivity to other infrastructures – for example, international or federal networks? • Network operations, access policy, management and measurement across administrative domains?

  8. HOPI Project Goals • Examine new infrastructures for the future • Model a set of optical waves • Design team formed to coordinate service definition and recommend equipment functionality and activities • Tension between Experimental vs. Operational Use • Near Term Goals • Created a white paper for the April I2 member meeting describing a testbed plan • Requested comments on the testbed plan • Define needed equipment functionality • Implement testbed Q4 of this year • Possibly coordinate and experiment with other similar projects

  9. HOPI Basic Service Since only a single wave available for HOPI to model new architectures, attempt will be made to model multiple waves using GigE deterministic paths.
