Artifact 1 • Large temples were built in the middle of city for the gods and goddesses. • Special rituals took place inside the temples. • Each god protected there own city. • Hundreds of gods responsible for everything that happens in the world. • Believed there world was controlled by god and goddesses. • The picture is a painting in which a ziggurat is being shown while a ritual is taking place. Artifact 2 • Gods look and act like humans • The gods had super natural powers that humans did not have. • The gods played a huge part in how the people expressed there thoughts of human life. • The picture is showing an example of a god in human form.   10. Artifact 3 Adad- He was the god of storms and was usually shown with a lightning fork. Anu- He was the sky god, the supreme ruler of all and his symbol was a horned cap. Ninhursag- She was an important Sumerian goddess called “ Mother of the gods.” The picture shows a carving in which you can see the god Anu. Linked citation goes here Return to Exhibit

Artifact 4 • There is not a lot know about the Indus valley gods because we can not yet understand there writing. • One goddess that historians do know about is the Tiger Goddess • She is on one of the seals that we recovered in the Indus Valley and is one of the more famous goddesses. Artifact 5 A few other gods and goddesses that are know: • Durga Durga-He is one of the most powerful gods and has all the powers of all the gods combined. • Kali Kali- She was the main goddess, sometimes called Chandi and was one of the big three. • Saraswati-She was the goddess of speech and language. • Divine Mother-She is one of the main goddesses to worship. Artifact 6 • They worshipped gods in human form but with modifications like more arms. • The people of the Indus Valley did not gather to worship they worshipped on there own time • One of the most important ways to worship was to sing, but most songs were sang to the god Indra. Artifact 7 • Rituals for gods were performed in temples. • The Pharaoh was the one who performed the rituals. • The Egyptians enjoyed telling stories about there gods and goddesses. • The Egyptians thought it was important to worship the gods and goddesses so that life would continue smoothly.   15. Artifact 8 Some Egyptian Gods and Goddesses: • Anubis-He had a jackal head and was the god of embalming and the dead. • Ra- He had a hawk head and a sun disk, he was the sun god. He was believed to be swallowed every night and reborn every morning. • Tawaret- She had a hippo head, lion arms and legs, and the tail of a crocodile. Her job was to protect women during pregnancy and childbirth. • Each god has a symbol associated with them. • Gods are depicted in art.   16. Artifact 9 • Gods some times thought of in human form but more powerful. • Thought to live like humans just not on earth. • The gods were both feared and loved. • Gods shown in many art forms. Artifact 10 • The Chinese worshiped many gods. • For every god there is a mocking fable or pun. • If people deified the gods they were cursed to be prone to mistakes. • The gods represented either weather, natural forces or abstract ides • The picture is an example of one of the stories written about the gods of China. Artifact 11 • The gods of china are based of many religions. • Some are based on Taoist ideas like 8 gods who represent 8 ways of being human • Some gods are believed to be great Buddhist that when they died turned into gods • Other gods are based of the Hindus beliefs. • Most gods worshiped then are still worshipped today in China and in certain religions. Artifact 12 Some of the Ancient Chinese gods and goddesses: • Guanyin-She was the goddess of mercy and she gave comfort and aid to all. • Jade Emperor- He is the highest deity ruling in the Universe. He controls the gods of the Buddhist religion and the Taoist religion. • Long Wang- He is the dragon king and can manipulate weather by controlling wind and rain. • Kitchen God- He reports to the Jade Emperor how everyone is doing. He is one of the most important gods and one of the gods that the people try to please the most. The picture is a picture of the Jade Emperor one of the most important and well know gods. Artifact 13 • The gods of Greece were dived into several categories- The Olympians, Titians and the Primevals. • The Olympians were the main gods. • They were born and grew just how humans did but the gods never aged and never died. • There were never more than 12 gods living on Mount Olympus at one time. • Historians believe that the Greeks were afraid of many of the gods. • Some of the gods and goddesses were: • Zeus- The king of all the gods, controlled weather, his symbol was the thunderbolt, and he was concerned with hospitality. • Poseidon- He was the god of the sea and horses, known for having a bad temper, greatly feared, and his symbol was the trident. • Aphrodite- She was the goddess of love and beauty and here symbols were birds mostly dives, geese, and sparrows. Artifact 14 • Many stories were told about the Greek gods. • The stories often times had violence or something sexual. • Now the stories are told for fun all over the world. • Most of the stories were written to explain things that the Greeks didn’t fully understand. • Many of the stories had morals or lessons to be learned from them. • The picture is of a book with Greek myths in it that you could get today. Artifact 15 • The Romans had a god in charge of everything. • All their gods as a collection were called the Pantheon. • There gods were mostly influenced by the Latins and the Greeks. • The people of Rome would hear about new gods and decide if they would believe in the god or not. • The Romans believed that there gods played a part in building Rome. • All the gods had magical powers specific to that god. Artifact 16 Some of the Roman gods and goddesses: • Jupiter- He was the most powerful god, the king of the gods, and had a thunderbolt. • Neptune- He was the lord of the sea and was very powerful. • Venus- She was the goddess of love and beauty. • The Romans also believed that when Aeneas, Romulus, and Julius Caesar died they were made into a god. Artifact 17 • The Roman and Greek gods were very similar. • Many of the Roman gods were based of the Greeks gods. • Sometimes people confuse what god were from which culture because the gods were so similar.
