Imperial China Collapses • Suns’ Revolutionary Alliance overthrows the Qing Dynasty Cause: Many Chinese believed that CH needed to modernize and nationalize; tired of countries controling CH trade and economy Effects: Creation of new Republic of China and increased nationalism • Sun turns presidency over to Yuan Shikai C: Sun lacked the authority and military support to secure national unity E: Yuan betrayed democratic ideals of revolution & ruled as a dictator; warlords took power, roads & bridges fell apart, crops were destroyed & many starved to death • The May Fourth Movement begins C: CH were upset that Treaty of Versailles gave Japan territories and privileges in CH that had belonged to Germany E: showed CH ppl wanted to strengthen CH, young CH intellectuals turned against Sun’s belief in Western Democracy and embraced Lenin’s brand of Soviet communism; CH Commie Party was formed • Nationalist forces move into Shanghai C: KMT feared that CH Commies would create a Socialist economy E: purge of most Commie Party members; Brit & US recognized Nationalist gov’t; civil war • Communists begin the Long March C: Commies needed to escape being killed by Jiang’s Nationalist forces E: Mao and other leaders survived; attracted new followers of Commie Party; civil war continued • Japan invades Manchuria C: Japan was being imperialistic; CH was weakened by civil war E: Thousands of CH killed; farmland destroyed; civil war stopped b/c Nationalist and CH joined together to fight JP
