What does UConn have to Offer? • A Carnegie Foundation Research University Very High ranking • Ranked #1 Public University in New England (1999 – 2007) (U.S. News & World Report) • 10 Schools and Colleges at Storrs • 8 Undergraduate Degrees – 105 majors, 73 minors • 16 Graduate Degrees – 90 Fields of Study • 5 Professional Degree Programs (JD, LLM, MD, DMD, PharmD) • Many enrichment opportunities (Honors Program, Individualized Majors, UG Research, Study Abroad, COOP , Internships)

The University of Connecticut • Completed the 10-year UCONN 2000 initiative that has invested $1 billion in buildings and infrastructure. • Second year of “21st Century UCONN” initiative-A $1.3 billion State initiative to establish UConn as the best Public Research University in the Northeast • Approximately 16,400 undergraduates at Storrs Campus and 21,000 UG students enrolled at all campuses • Offers four-year academic merit and need-based scholarships

Undergraduate Enrollment con’t. • Typical admitted student profile for Fall 07: 1295 combined Critical Reading & Math SAT score • SOE has the highest percentage of honors students of any of the 10 schools at UConn (13%) • Admitted students for fall 07 include 14 Valedictorians and 9 Salutatorians • 309 students graduated this past academic year

  10. SOE Scholarships • $780,000 academic merit scholarships offered to Fall 07 entering students • Awarding approximately $585,000 to 212 continuing students on Tuesday, April 17, 2007

As a Carnegie Foundation Research University - Very High Research Activity ranking • We generate knowledge, new processes and ideas which have resulted in more than 175 patents • Since 2002, the SOE has increased its annual research expenditures from $12 million to $21 million • The following are a few examples of external funding agencies: • U.S. Department of Energy - $1.9 million • Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) - $1.47 million • National Institute of Health – $1.36 million • Department of Defense – $1.22 million • National Science Foundation – $.79 million • Five National Science Foundation Early Career Development Awards - ~$400,000 each All grants have provisions for UG research

School of Engineering Facilities • This building housing Computer Science & Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering – completed in May 2003 • A new Engineering Building as part of 21st Century UConn • Engineering complex and physical plant comprises eight existing structures at the Storrs and adjoining Depot Campus • Teaching and research laboratories with $25 million in state-of-the-are equipment • $147 million sophisticated engineering graphics and analysis software • School maintains its own network of computing services (ECS)

School of Engineering’s Future Plans • Educate an Engineering Workforce that can compete globally • Achieve recognition as the most comprehensive public engineering program in the Northeast, become a regional center for excellence in Sustainable Energy, Fuel Cell Technology, and Infrastructure & Transportation Security by: Recruiting, embracing, supporting and retaining excellent faculty, staff and students

How will this be achieved? • Recruit top students by offering innovative programs in Engineering and Technology and world renowned faculty such at our Eminent Faculty positions in Energy Conversion • Retain students by offering various resources and experiences – MAT Center, Peer Tutoring, student societies, mentoring, UG Research and Study Abroad • Full time faculty teach all our courses and advise your daughters and sons • Serve as the major supplier of well-trained engineers (over 14,309 graduates so far)

How will this be achieved? • Establish centers of Excellence in selected research areas (i.e. Sustainable Energy, Nanotechnology, Infrastructure and Transportation Security, Advanced Information Systems) • Eminent Faculty positions (~10 new positions) • Undergraduate Course Clustering • Become a model for public university-industry cooperation and partnership by fostering collegial & dynamic academic excellence with leading corporations in CT
