  1. What do you notice? What do you wonder?

  2. Phylum Chordata • the phylum includes: •  Vertebrata(mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds) •  Tunicata (salps and sea squirts) • Cephalochordata (lancelets). • Bilaterally symmetrical • Segmented spine.

  3. Chordates continued… • At some point in their development all chordates have: • Hollow Dorsal Nerve Cord • Notochord (supports spinal cord) • Pharyngeal Gill Slits • Post Anal Tail • All vertebrates (like us) are Chordates.

  4. Protochordates • Protochordates means “first-chordates” • Technically not a vertebrate • Protochordates = any member of the two invertebratesubphyla of Phylum Chordata • 3 Major Types of Protochordates • Tunicates • Lancelet • Acorn Worm

  5. Vertebrates • All vertebrates have: • Skeleton • Spinal Cord • Backbone • Skull • Brain • All fish are considered vertebrates!

  6. Tunicata • Also known as Sea Squirts. • Have an incurrent and excurrent siphons. • Filter Feeders, but can be predatory! • Have both male and female parts. • Have each of the characteristics of chordates at various points in the life cycle.

  7. Cephalochordata • Lancelet • Lives in Sand • Filter Feeder • Separate Sexes & External Fertilization • Acorn Worm • Looks like a worm • Filter feed in the intertidal zones

  8. Jawless Fishes • The first vertebrate fishes to evolve. • Oldest group, very primitive • Scale-less skin. • Some parasitic, some filterfeed • Circular mouth, fleshy teeth. • Cartilaginous skeleton • Only two jawless species still exist. • Hagfish • Sea Lampreys

  9. Hagfish Sea Lamprey

  10. Today’s Plan • Today, you’ll watch several videos about the Sea Lamprey in the US. • After you’re done you will make an online poster to spread the word toothers about the problems withthe Sea Lamprey.

  11. Exit Ticket Answer the following questions… 1. What do you think would be best way to keep lampreys from spreading across the United States?
