  3. Introduction • Red Storm is a prototype model. • Created to address the many highly complex computing problems with nuclear weapon stockpiles. • Lots and lots of power! • Importance!!

  4. Scope • In order to understand the true potential of the Red Storm, a firm background must be established. • A focus is needed in the history of the computer, the core components of the machine, and the importance of the top500 and the machines ranking list to feel the impact that this machine can have to today’s life.

  6. History (cont…) • Designed and created jointly by Sandia and Cray Inc. • Computer Science Research Institute at Sandia National Laboratories. • Winter 2004 - installed in Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM.

  7. History (cont…) • It was designed to address the many highly complex computing problems with nuclear weapon stockpiles. • Purpose was to allow modeling and simulation of these problems.

  11. Importance of the Top500 • Top of the line. • Machine Creators are well respected. • November 2007 – Red Storm Ranked 6th. • Other NNSA/Sandia placements in 2007. • Thunderbird – 18th in rank. • Razor – 143rd in rank.

  12. Importance (cont…) • Statistics on high-performance computers are of major interest to manufacturers, users, and potential users. • The main objective of the TOP500 list is to provide a ranked list of general purpose systems that are in common use for high end applications.
