Special Dates • 1809- Free grants acquire land in Marrickville • 1864- Marrickville National School opened • 1865- Marrickville Post office opened • 1878- Marrickvile Town Hall and Illawarra Rd opened • 1884- Marrickville Train station opened- Now Sydenham station • 1889- Great Marrickville Flood • 1901- Marrickville’s population was 18,775 people • 1908- Marrickville Margarine factory opened • 1987- Marrickville Metro opened • 1996- Marrickville Council adopts a statement of commitment to the Aboriginal people

History of Marrickville Road • Marrickville Road was part of the farms and grazing areas of the Wardell Estate • 1880’s the population grew • 1895- railway link from Belmore to Bankstown • 1914- Fire station opened • 1915- St Brigid’s Church opened • By 1919 the road is the centre of the municipality

  5. Immigration • Received pre and post war migrants • Marrickville has the largest shift in ethnic composition • After 1967 White Australia policy was abolished and this raised the Asian Migration with increased numbers of Vietnamese immigrants
