  2. Vision A world where the use or probable use of illicit, abandoned, unsecured or indiscriminately used conventional weapons of war no longer threaten civilians. Mission To develop policy options, implement destruction and mitigation programs and engage civil society in order to reduce the harmful world wide effects generated by indiscriminately used, illicit and abandoned conventional weapons of war. Mission

SA/LW Activities • Leads interagency development of U.S. foreign policy on SA/LW: UN Program of Action, Marking & Tracing Instrument, Convention on Conventional Weapons • Assists in destruction of excess, loosely-secured or otherwise at-risk SA/LW and associated ammunition • Assists in improving the physical security and stockpile management of remaining stockpiles, in partnership with DTRA Activities

SA/LW Destruction • 25 countries to date • Over 900,000 weapons and 80 million rounds ammunition since 2001 • Almost 20,000 MANPADS since 2003 • Long-term engagement in source countries • Short projects in affected countries - often through DDR • 19 projects ongoing or funded and about to begin Activities

  5. Success Stories Bilateral and Multilateral Programs • Liberia • 33,000 SA/LW and 45 MANPADS destroyed. • Weapons were collected through UN-led DDR process. Ukraine • United States is lead nation for first phase of the NATO-PfP project. • Plans to destroy 133,000 tons of munitions, 1.5 million SA/LW and 1,000 MANPADS over 12 years at a cost of over $28 million to donors. • Largest destruction project of its kind. Success Stories Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) Grants • PM/WRA takes an integrated approach to address threats posed by excess or abandoned ordnance and SA/LW stockpiles in bilateral, post-conflict projects. • Afghanistan • More than 91,800 SA/LW and • 101 MANPADS destroyed • 2,000 tons of ammunition destroyed in 2005 alone Sudan • 16,000 SA/LW and 21 MANPADS destroyed • 63,000 pieces of assorted munitions destroyed Cases
