  2. What is SA? • The WDPD must undergo a statutory Sustainability Appraisal (SA) • SA identifies and evaluates the DPD’s impacts on the: • Economy • Community • Environment • The three dimensions of sustainable development

What is SA? • The SA findings should be reflected in the adopted WDPD to ensure that maximises its contribution to future sustainability • The SA process incorporates the requirements of a new European law which requires development plans to undergo a Strategic Environmental Assessment (the ‘SEA Directive’)

What’s been done so far? • The evidence base and draft sustainability objectives have been developed and are documented in a Scoping Report • The Scoping Report has been subject to consultation and is in the process of being finalised • Today provides you with a chance to have your say on the sustainability objectives before these are finalised…

  7. Sustainability objectives • Economic • To exploit the growth potential of business sectors • To encourage sustainable economic growth • To develop and market Greater Manchester’s image • To develop and maintain a healthy labour market

Sustainability objectives • Social • To reduce the need to travel, improve choice and use of sustainable transport modes • To improve physical health and mental health and reduce health inequalities • To improve access to good quality affordable and resource efficient housing • To enable groups and communities to contribute to decision making • To improve access to and use of basic goods, services and amenities for all groups

Sustainability objectives • Environment • To protect, enhance, manage and restore where appropriate, the rich diversity of cultural and built environment and archaeological assets • To protect, enhance, manage and restore where appropriate biodiversity, landscape accessibility, endangered species, habitats and sites of geological importance • To protect and improve local environmental quality • To protect and improve the quality of inland waters • To protect and improve air quality

Sustainability objectives • Environment (cont.) • To restore and protect land and soil and to manage contaminated land • To mitigate and adapt to climate change • To ensure the prudent use of natural resources and the sustainable management of existing resources • To minimise the requirement for energy use, promote efficient use and increase the use of energy from renewable resources • To manage waste sustainability, minimise waste, its production, and increase re-use, recycling and recovery rates

  11. What happens next? • GMGU will begin to generate options for waste management in Greater Manchester • Scott Wilson will appraise these options as they emerge and feedback to GMGU on their potential impacts • Options will be appraised against the sustainability objectives finalised today • GMGU will take the SA findings – as well as other factors - into account in determining their preferred options
