  1. CPD Portfolios

  2. Portfolio Development • Objectives:- • Understand the purpose of a CPD portfolio • Identify evidence which could be included in it • To introduce participants to the practicalities of developing and maintaining a professional portfolio • To understand the concept of reflection and how to document it.

  3. As early as 2002 the Scottish Government stated that: • ‘Leaders of AHPs should support staff in reserving a minimum of a half-day per month, pro rata, for dedicated CPD activity, in accordance with the recommendations of professional bodies.’ • (Building on Success - Future Directions for the Allied Health Professions in Scotland; SGHD 2002)

  4. Learning • “ Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it. And then he feels perhaps there isn’t.” • Milne 1926 P 1

  5. Continuing Professional Development • ‘a range of learning activities through which professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practice safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice’ • (AHP Project 2002)

  6. What is a CPD Portfolio? • “a collection of evidence which demonstrates the continuing acquisition of skills, knowledge, attitudes, understanding and achievement. It is both retrospective and prospective as well as reflecting the current stage of development and activity of the individual”. • (Brown 1992)

  7. Examples of why you should complete a portfolio • HPC requirements for re-registration • Evidence for KSF • Greater work satisfaction • Evaluating your career • Applying for a new post • Seeking enhanced grading • Seeking access to training • Recording new skills and experiences • Job evaluation

  8. Standards for HPC CPD • A registrant must: • Maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of their CPD activities; • Demonstrate that their CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current and future practice; • Seek to ensure that their CPD has contributed to the quality of their practice and service delivery; • Seek to ensure that their CPD benefits the service user; • Present a written profile containing evidence of their CPD on request. • www.hpc-uk.org

  9. Links to KSF • KSF describes and defines the knowledge and skills which NHS staff need to apply in their work in order to deliver quality services. • E-KSF is an electronic version of KSF, which is an online tool which stores your PDP, CPD activities and links to your KSF dimensions.
