Government • Chile is governed under the 1981 constitution • They have a directly elect president who is only allowed to serve a four-year-term • The bicameral legislature is made up of a 38 seat senate who serves an 8 year term • Their chamber of deputies is made up of 120 seats and they are elected for 4 years • Chile’s government was made to resemble that of the United States • Michelle Bachelet is the first woman president of Chile • She was elected on January 15, 2006

  3. Education • PRE-HIGHER EDUCATION • The school providing this education is a general/basic education school • The length of the program is 8 years long • The age level is from 6 to 13 • At the end of their school years here they receive a • “Primary School Leaving Certificate”

Secondary School • The type of school providing the education is a Middle Education Scientific-humanistic school • It is a 4 year program • The age level is from 13 to 17 • At the end of the school years they receive a license of middle education • ACADEMIC YEAR: • Classes are held from March to December • The language of instruction is Spanish

  5. % of students in school • Children ages: • 3 to 5- 30% • 6 to 14- 95% • 14 to 18- 65% • The decrease in students as they get older is due to the children having to go and get jobs to help support their families

Culture • Chilean culture is very rich and is influenced by Chile's European heritage. • The inhabitants of Chile are a combination of both Indigenous groups and Spanish • art and literature: the Nobel Prize winners Pablo Neruda and Gabriel Mistral are the two “legendary masters of literature in Chile” the museums displaying the work of these two are the “pride of the natives”

Chilean music • Since the 1960’s Chile’s music has been gaining international popularity • Music in Chile ranges from folkloric music, popular music and also classical • There are 3 different types of folkloric music: northern, central, and southern. They each have their own characteristics and sounds

Dance and festivals • Dance and festivals are an integral part of Chilean culture • Chile’s national dance is the Cueca • The Cueca signifies the glory of the rebellion against the Spaniards • The Tonada is another important traditional song • This song is similar to the Cueca but the Tonada is not danced and it has a more prominent melody

  9. Industry • Chile's industry is largely based on local mineral resources, agricultural raw materials, and forestry. Industries include copper refining, nitrate products, iron smelting and steel production (in a large government-owned plant near Concepcion), oil refining, cement and various building materials, chemicals, timber and pulp, furniture and various wood products, a wide variety of food products, meat packing, fish packing and fish products, sugar, wine, and beer. There is also a large textile, clothing, and leather industry. Industry is mainly concentrated in and around four main urban centers: Santiago, the largest industrial center (in which 20 percent of the local labor force is employed in industry), Valparaiso, Concepcion, and Valdivia.
