  2. GMO-Genetically Modified Organisms • GMO’s have had specific changes made to their DNA • Exposure to chemicals or radiation • Selective breeding for plants and animals • GMO’s can be plants such as corn, soy beans and cotton as well as animals.

  3. In the early 1990’s GMO foods became available

  4. Advantages of GMO’s • Scientists claim GMO’s • Have higher and faster crop yields • Are resistant to disease and pests • Lower pesticide and herbicide applications • Have higher profitability for farmers • Can have increased nutritional value

Disadvantages of GMO’s • Health and safety • The FDA does not test nor require tests for the safety of GM food • Independent studies have shown GM food can cause heart, kidney and liver damage • Gene transfer • Creation on new allergies • Unknown effects on humans • Labeling • No labeling requirements • Ecological • Cross pollination/results in new more resistant pests including weeds • Works against nature • Economical • Costly and lengthy process • Law suits-Intellectual property • Many unknown • Ethical • Is it right?
