Important Literary Terms • Author’s Perspective – a unique combination of ideas, attitudes, feelings and beliefs that make up the way a writer looks at the world • How can I figure out an author’s perspective? • Readers can infer an author’s perspective from elements in a story – such as plot, character, and theme – and from the tone and cultural context of the story.
Important Literary Terms • Theme – the central idea or message within a work of literature. An author’s perception about life or human nature shared with the reader. • How can I figure out the theme? • One way to discover the theme of a piece is to think about what happens to the central characters. The importance of those events, stated in terms that apply to all human beings is usually the theme.

Ray Bradbury • Born August 22, 1920 • Born in Waukegan, Illinois • Had a Swedish immigrant mother and a father who was a power and telephone lineman • Bradbury was a reader and writer throughout his youth
Ray Bradbury • He spent much of his time time in the Carnegie Library in Waukegan • This library was the setting for one of his novels • His most popular novels include, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine & Fahrenheit 451
