  2. War of 1812 The Role of Pennsylvania The British had no respect for our new country and for the sovereignty of American citizens President James Madison called for troops to engage the British in a war. Pa Gov. Simon Snyder requested 14,000 volunteers, he got three times that number

  3. Pennsylvanians fought in many locations from Canada to New Orleans. Daniel Dobbins He was born on January 5, 1776 in Pennsylvania, later he became a merchant mariner. He traveled to Washington DC to urge the building of a naval fleet for Lake Erie

  4. He was placed in charge and he and his workers built six boats. The boats were mounted with cannon dragged from Pittsburg With these six plus some three older boats Commander Oliver H Perry sailed west to meet the British fleet. Commander Perry and his fleet won that battle.

In1812 the decision was made to move the capital to the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River where John Harris had his ferry landing.   14. Gov. Curtain put Pennsylvania in the forefront of the states to preserve the union. He urged force to keep the country together The first five companies called to serve were from Allentown, Lewistown, Reading and two from Pottsville. Before the union could wage a vigorous war, finance was needed

  17. After the war Gov. Curtain worked to reduce the war debt of the Commonwealth. Gov. John White Geary continued to work on the debt. Pennsylvania at the time was very prosperous and these two men were capable leaders.

  18. Two Pennsylvanians had impact on the nation post war Sen. Thaddeus Stevens Fought for strong public education in America He was the most power ful man in the US Senate He wanted to punish the south for the civil war and the damage that was done to the country and especially to Pennsylvania.

General Winfield Hancock was a hero of Gettysburg, he forgave the south and wanted a peace that would reunite the country and salve the wounds from the war between the states He was in charge of hanging the four people convicted of killing Lincoln. He did not feel that Mary Surratt was guilty and did not like fulfilling the order He ran for president but lost to James Garfield in a close election

The Civil War was fought with no large artillery guns, no grenades, no poison gases no tanks, no planes and no effective submarines. Yet, the number of soldiers killed was second highest to all wars up to the Persian Gulf War .
