  1. e-IRG Workshop CSC, October 4, 2006 HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY COMP / LABORATORY OF PHYSICS Recent developments in cyber-infrastructures: the ”northern dimension” Risto M. Nieminen Helsinki University of Technology rni@fyslab.hut.fi www.fyslab.hut.fi

  2. 1. Finnish National GRID/e-Science Strategy • Due 31.12. 2006 Proposed Outline: Centers of Excellence Strategic Competence Centers ESFRI, e-IRG E-Science Strategy NDGF, Nordic e-Science Education and Training Research Infrastructure • CS&E • Universities • Colleges • Master’s Programmes • Doctoral Programmes • Funding agencies • Methodological and • enabling research • Multi-disciplinary • applications • FUNET, CSC • Topical Grids

  3. 2. Nordic e-Science Strategy Denmark-Sweden-Norway-Finland-Iceland NordForsk NOS-N NOS-H NOS-M networks, infrastructurenatural sciences social sciences medical sciences

  4. Bottom-up, topical computing grid MGRID – the first large-scale grid structure in operation in Finland • Based on strong tradition in computational materials science • Partners: seven university laboratories in physics, chemistry + HIP+CSC • Funding: Academy of Finland + participating organisations • Coordinated procurement & installation (CSC) • Operational, middle-heavy throughput facility since late 2004 • based on Linux clusters

  5. The M-GRID system • Different-sized Clusters: • HP Proliant 64-bit Opteron • 2 x 1 Gbit interconnect • Operating system: • Linux Red Hat Rocks • GRID middleware: NorduGrid ARC • Total cost ca. 1 M EUR • In total over 1000 processors, expanding • Total peak performance 2.9 Teraflops • Versatile selection of shared software, archives, databases • Good value for money!

  6. 4. Top-end, Capability Computing • CSC as a national facility – new procurements • European infrastructure: HET, FP7 ?

  7. Thank you for your attention. Welcome to Finland !
