  2. Why is an online presence important? Find new customers. Show the old ones you care about their needs, not just your own. Build awareness and manage your reputation. Stay up-to-speed in a fast-paced and constantly evolving world. BOTTOM LINE: You need to be a player in the game before you can even think about moving on to the next level. Conversations about your brand are already happening – if you join in, you can shape the outcome. We’re moving…to the web.

  3. A Quick Evaluation… Do you have a website that is easy to find, navigate, and maintain? Do you use email to communicate with your customers and have a schedule of “email blasts” to keep them informed and keep your name on their mind? Where do you show up on a Google search? Do you know anyone who can help you get better results? Do you have friends or customers that use the internet daily? You absolutely need a website. Going above and beyond this is optional but highly recommended. Once you’ve established an online presence, let the world know!

  4. Referrals are great, but how do you reach the untapped circle of people outside of your network? Social media. (Not convinced yet? Look at this…)

Also called “User-Generated Content,” Social Media is the use of online technologies to create and share information and experiences within a social environment, including text, video, audio or multimedia meant to stimulate peer-to-peer interaction. So…in English? Sites like Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, MySpace, Twitter, LiveJournal, Second Life, Digg, Delicious, and hundreds of others allow people to talk about and share whatever they want and let others join in. It’s also free advertising and “the new PR.” As you know from BNI, word-of-mouth is arguably the most effective marketing tactic. Social media simply moves the conversation online. People trust their peers more than companies – put it in their hands. Which are we concerned with? The big three: Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter will be the most helpful and are some of the most used for business purposes. What is Social Media?

  6. With over 175 million active users, this site is the leader in social networking and peer-to-peer conversation. Businesses, bands, celebrities, products, families, groups, causes, and students all can take advantage of its capabilities, including photo and video sharing, messaging, applications and extension to mobile phones. Create a business page, add content and information. Link your website and page together to drive traffic to both. Spread the word. Have some friends help build your “fan” base. Add content and update weekly to give your fans a reason to come back! Facebook

  9. LinkedIn More for appearance than something you actively manage, this site is like the professional networking equivalent of Facebook and a great add-on. Add only people you know or would like to connect with for business, or have a contact introduce you.

  10. Twitter The purpose of this site is “microblogging,” or blogging in small doses, called tweets. Post small messages (new hire, product discount, sales) or link to a larger article (a press release or case article). Balance between relevant information and creating a “personality” for your brand. ONLY use Twitter if you can commit to posting new tweets at least every week or your followers won’t bother.

  12. The one thing you should take away… Social Media requires effort and constant maintenance, but over time will become an enjoyable conversation with people you value most – your clients. Spend a lunch break creating your first business page. Then search Facebook for the “Avon Pink Panthers 2009” to help David out on his walk. Remember that this is only the tip of the iceberg and the potential is unlimited! Be creative and committed to keeping your conversation alive! Have fun!
