Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2007 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO INTRODUCTION Jaipur Heritage International Festival was held annually between 2003 and 2007, firmly establishing itself internationally as a leading brand in the sphere of creative city arts festivals. It generated more than Rs. 20 Crores of publicity for Jaipur and Rajasthan during this period as free editorial coverage. In 2006, JHIF became the first city festival anywhere in the world to receive endorsement from UNESCO as a ‘People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development’. Building on this earlier public investment and substantial brand equity, JHIF was re-established as an annual city festival in January 2010 through a ground-breaking partnership between the Government of Rajasthan and Jaipur Virasat Foundation. This partnership is an initiative of the state government’s proposedRajasthan Heritage Authority, designed to promote heritage-based regional and urban development (Vikas) by conserving the state’s tangible and intangible heritage (Virasat). Over the next four years, JHIF will play a key role in the ‘Vikas & Virasat’ strategy by showcasing and disseminating some of its creative outcomes, reaching out to all sectors of society and helping to position Jaipur as a global, world-class heritage city.

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO VIKAS & VIRASAT CONCLAVE [1/4] • January 19th, 2010 | Rangayan, Jawahar Kala Kendra • This one-day forum presented the holistic, Rajasthan-focused ‘Vikas & Virasat’ strategy. • Focusing on innovative strategies for change and the participation of experts and civil society in grassroots development, more than 25 high profile speakers and moderators from India and overseas took part, including a UNESCO-funded delegation of central and regional government officials from France. • The Inaugural session culminated in speeches by three Government of Rajasthan ministers: • Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister • Bina Kak, Minister for Tourism, Art & Culture • Shanti Kumar Dhariwal, Minister for Urban Development & Housing Declaring his government’s commitment to protecting culture and heritage, the Chief Minister stated that “we have to be sincere to the restoration work”.

Total audience attendance: c. 500

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO VIKAS & VIRASAT EXHIBITION [1/3] “Rajasthan – Conservation Challenges and the Dynamics of a Living Heritage” January 19th – 29th, 2010 | Jawahar Kala Kendra “Rajasthan – Conservation Challenges and the Dynamics of a Living Heritage” is the first in a planned series of ‘Vikas & Virasat’ touring exhibitions for people in Rajasthan and other parts of India. Organised by the DRONAH-JVF Heritage Studio,it comprises 150 photographic panels showcasing 30 heritage conservation projects from the nine cultural regions of Rajasthan. Designed to provide a general overview of Rajasthan’s built legacy and the different processes used to conserve architectural heritage, the case studies range from urban conservation, revitalization and historic streetscapes to landscapes, heritage education and community participation. Total audience attendance: 1500-2000

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO CITY USTAVS [1/3] January 21st, 2010 | Ramganj Chouper January 22nd, 2010 | Old Vidhyadhar Nagar The Festival’s City Utsav performances are created for communities that cannot normally access international cultural events. Many of these people have migrated to Jaipur from other parts of Rajasthan. Each performance therefore includes cultural forms from across the state so that people can identify and share their roots. International artists also take part. This year it was the collaborative band ‘Dharohar’, featuring 8 musicians from Rajasthan alongside UK beatboxer, Jason Singh, and singer-songwriter, Bex Mather. By bringing events to underprivileged neighbourhoods, the Festival seeks to involve these communities in the ‘Vikas & Virasat’ movement. This year’s City Utsav performances at Ramganj Chouper (a largely Muslim area) and Vidhyadhar Nagar witnessed active participation from local community groups. Their enthusiasm and active participation helped to ensure that these events were hugely successful. Total audience attendance: c. 6000

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO CHILDREN’S HUB [1/2] January 21s t – 22nd, 2010 | Old Vidhyadhar Nagar JHIF 2010 included a range of special performances for children. Over two days, a total of 3,500 children from 18 schools visited the JHIF Children’s Hub at Old Vidhyadhar Nagar. This was an opportunity for them to experience Rajasthan’s traditional non-stage art forms and understand their roots. The performers included street magicians, puppeteers, nat-kala (acrobats) and jugglers. Total audience attendance: 3,500

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO HERITAGE WALK [1/2] January 23rd, 2010 | Chowkri Modikhana The last day of JHIF 2010 began with an early morning heritage walk through the old walled city of Jaipur. This event was attended by the Mayor of Jaipur, Jyoti Khandelwal, plus numerous eminent citizens, schools groups, NGOs and representatives from a UNESCO-led French delegation of heritage experts. The aim of the walk was to raise awareness amongst local residents about the need for responsible heritage management and to encourage them to keep their own area clean. The walk was led by JVF Community Director, Vinod Joshi, with Jaipur Heritage Citizens Festival Committee Chairperson, Rajiv Arora. Total participation: c. 300

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO FOLK ARTS & COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCES [1/4] • January 16th/17th/19th/20th, 2010 | JKK & Jaleb Chowk, Amber Fort • A distinctive feature of JHIF programming is the emphasis placed on traditional folk arts and collaborations with national and international performers from other genres. Four large-scale performances in JHIF 2010 followed this format: • Ek shaam Langon ke naam: More than 35 musicians from 3 generations of the Langa community aged 4 to 80 took part in this spectacular display of traditional folk music from western Rajasthan, including performances on very rare instruments such as the pungi; • Banjaran: An evening of compositions by Jaipur-based sitarist, Pt. Krishna Mohan Bhatt, inspired by Rajasthan’s tales of love and romance and involving a mixed ensemble of folk, classical and world music artists; • Ruhaniyat: An evening of music infused with the spirit of Sufi spiritualism, led by sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan with vocalists Rekha Bhardwaj, Anwar Khan Manganiyar and Balbeer Beera; • Dharohar: The collaborative band that rocked Jodhpur at last year’s RIFF festival, featuring 8 musicians from Rajasthan alongside UK beatboxer, Jason Singh, and singer-songwriter, Bex Mather. • Total audience attendance: 2,400

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO OTHER MUSIC & DANCE PERFORMANCES [1/3] • January 15th, 2010 | Birla Mandir – Sundar Gopalam • January 18th, 2010 | Jaleb Chowk, Amber Fort – Asia Electrik • January 21st, 2010 | Govind Devji Mandir – Bhajan Sandhya • In addition to the folk-based and collaborative events at JHIF 2010, music and dance performances showcasing other genres were presented on three evenings: • Sundar Gopalam: 11 students from Jaipur Kathak Kendra presented a newly choreographed interpretation of stories from Bhagavata Purana about the young Lord Krishna. This colourful dance performance took place in Jaipur’s Birla Temple and was accompanied by sitarist Hari Sharan Bhatt and party. • Asia Electrik: Jazz guru Louiz Banks on keyboards with international percussion megastar Sivamani and young virtuoso sitarist Niladari Kumar sent the Jaipur audience wild at Amber Fort with their heady mix of ragas, rock and jazz. • Bhajan Sandhya: Mumbai-based vocalist, Hema Upasani, enchanted visitors to the Govind Devji Mandir with a selection of devotional compositions by the celebrated poet saints Mirabai, Saint Kabir, Guru Nanak and Brahmanandji. • Total audience attendance: 2,200

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO HINDI & ENGLISH THEATRE [1/3] • January 22nd, 2010 | Birla Auditorium – Salesman Ramlal • January 23rd, 2010 | Birla Auditorium – The Caine Mutiny Court Martial • JHIF 2010 brought two plays to Jaipur from leading Mumbai-based directors Feroz Abbas Shah and Naseeruddin Shah: • Salesman Ramlal – a Hindi adaptation of Arthur Miller’s classic play Death of a Salesman – directed by Feroz Abbas Shah and featuring acclaimed actors Satish Kaushik and Seema Biswas. • The Caine Mutiny Court Martial – a post-World War II courtroom drama based on Herman Wouk’s novel –directed by Naseeruddin Shah and presented by his company, Motley Productions. • The Birla Auditorium was full to capacity on both evenings (1,200 seats) and the plays met with an enthusiastic response from the audiences. • Total audience attendance: 2,400

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO CRAFTS EXHIBITIONS ‘DORI’ – A thread From January 15th, 2010 | Various Locations Inspired by the traditional technique of stringing beads into jewellery, ‘DORI’ was conceived as a related series of events showcasing the outcomes of work by professional designers from Jaipur with crafts practitioners in Rajasthan. Centred around the JVF ‘Mela’ gallery in C-Scheme, the programme for DORI included a total of 9 exhibitions showcasing products, projects and experiences that synergise contemporary design and crafts. DORI demonstrated how change can be managed to enable continuity while ensuring sustainable livelihood opportunities for traditional artisans. The project was curated by Jatin Bhatt and Ayush Kasliwal.

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO JAIPUR FRINGE ‘Virasat Car Rally’ January 17th, 2010 | Ashok Club JHIF 2010 saw the launch of ‘Jaipur Fringe’ – the first step towards a thriving community-led cultural programme that from 2011 onwards will take place across the city at the same time as JHIF. The ‘Virasat Car Rally’ gave visually challenged navigators the opportunity to work with sighted drivers for the first time ever in Rajasthan. 50 drivers took part with their navigators giving directions using a Braille navigation chart. As well as being challenging and good fun for everyone involved, the event helped to raise awareness about the abilities of people with disabilities. Total participants / audience: c. 300

Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO MEDIA COVERAGE JHIF 2010 was covered extensively in the local and national media. Additional coverage also appeared online. A total of more than 50 articles about JHIF 2010 appeared in prominent English and Hindi titles, including The Times of India, The Hindu, India Today, Dainik Bhaskar, Rajasthan Patrika and DNA After Hours. In particular, the inauguration of the Vikas & Virasat Exhibition by Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, and his speech at the Vikas & Virasat Conclave on January 19th attracted the media in large numbers. Jaipur Heritage International Festival 2010 People’s Platform for Creativity and Sustainable Development, Supported by UNESCO MARKETING • The marketing campaign for JHIF 2010 was targeted to attract local audiences from within Jaipur as well as national and international visitors to the city. • Key marketing initiatives were as follows: • The Festival web site (www.jaipurfestival.org) was developed and maintained; • 29 display advertisements were placed in local English and Hindi publications between January 13th and 23rd, 2010; • 25,000 SMS messages giving details about Festival events were sent daily to Jaipur citizens; • 72 marketing kiosks and 4 billboards were placed in strategic locations across the city; • 5,000 fliers were distributed to Festival venues plus selected hotels and restaurants; • Promotional emails were disseminated through the Indian Association of Tour Operators, the Rajasthan Association of Tour Operators and the Hotel & Restaurant Association of Rajasthan; • Cycle rickshaws broadcasting a recorded jingle travelled in the locality of the City Utsav venues for 8 hours per day over 3 days running up to these events. • Marketing initiatives for JHIF 2010 were handled on behalf of the Festival by Rajasthan CAN (Creative Alliance Network).
