Statue of John of Nepomuk Statuary of Cyril and Methodius

  30. The best time for a walk on the bridge is in the morning or in the evening or at night because this time is Prague the most beautiful. But don’t worry if you can’t go this time, because the Charles Bridge is beautiful all the time.

  31. Now go along Karlova (Charles) Street to Mariánské square. Karlova Street Mariánské square

  32. Library From the Charles Bridge we go along Charles Street to Mariánské square. You will see the library there. Charles Bridge City Library

  33. The first public library in Prague was opened on 1st July 1891. At the beginning it contained 3,370 books, which were used in the loans department and the reading room.

  34. The previous building of the Central library wasn't good enough. This problem solved Prague Municipal Insurance Company, which paid for the new building, which was built between 1925 and 1928.

  35. In 1938 the library contained 640 thousand volumes and over 2 million loans were taken out. • During the Nazi occupation thousands of books were rejected and destroyed. • After World War II the rejected books were returned back.

  36. Since 1999 the system called Koniáš was developed and new services were added. • From that place you will go along Platnéřská street to Old Town Square. Old Town Square

  37. Old Town Square Old Town Square is located in the centre of Old Town and historical centre of Prague. In the 11th century, periodic markets were held here. It’s value decreased after moving the capital to Vienna.

  38. This is a photo of Prague Astronomical Clock .A Legend tells that it was built by Master Hanuš, and that when he completed his work his eyes were burned to prevent him from building another astronomical clock. But this legend actually isn‘t true. Prague Astronomical Clock was built in 1410 by Mikuláš of Kadan and Jan Šindel. Master Hanuš only modified it. The figures at both sides of the Astronomical Clock move and Apostles are presented at the doorways above the Astronomical Clock every hour.

  39. This photo shows a plague with the names of 27 "Czech lords" who were executed in the square in 1621. The place of execution is marked on the ground (I didn't take a photo because there were people standing there and you would see nothing). The execution was an important point in Czech history, because it meant the end of the Bohemian period of the Thirty Years' War.

  40. THEPOWDER GATE HOW TO GET THERE ABOUT POWDER GATE (HISTORY) PHOTOS By Filip F.

  41. IF YOU ADHERE OUR ,,MEMORY PLAN“ YOU SHOULD BE ON OLDTOWN SQUARE. GO ALONG THE CELETNÁ STREET AND YOU´LL COME TO PRAŠNÁ BRÁNA (POWDER GATE)

  42. PRAŠNÁ BRÁNA (THE POWDWR GATE) ORIGINALLY, THERE WAS ONE OF THE OLD TOWN RAMPART GATES CALLED U SVATÉHO AMBROŽE (St. AMBROSE) ON ITS PLACE. LATER, IN THE 14th CENTURY IT WAS REPLACED BY HORSKÁ BRÁNA(MOUNTAIN GATE), CALLED SO BECAUSE HERE WAS THE BEGINNING OF A ROAD TO KUTNÁ HORA (KUTNÁ MOUNTAIN ). AFTER THE GATE LOST ITS DEFENSIVE SIGNIFICANCE IT WASN´T REPAIRED ANYMORE AND PEOPLE STARTED TO CALL IT ODRANÁ BRÁNA (DISSOLUTE GATE). IT WAS SHAME FOR THE CITY, SO ALDERMEN DECIDED TO PULL IT DOWN AND BUILD A NEW ONE. THE CONSTRUCTION BEGAN IN 1475 WITH MASONRY MASTER VÁCLAV AS THE WORKS FOREMAN. BUT HE WASN´T QUALIFIED ENOUGH, SO HE WAS SOON REPLACED BY MATYÁŠ REJSEK FROM PROSTĚJOV. IT WASN´T FINISHED, BECAUSE ALDERMEN LOST CONCERN IN IT. IT WAS PROVISIONALLY ROOFED AND LOST ALL FUNCTIONS. SINCE ABOUT 1750 IT WAS USED AS A GUNPOWDER STORE. THAT IS WHY IT´S CALLED THEPOWDER GATE. DURING PRUSSIAN SIEGE OF PRAGUE IN 1757 IT WAS LARGELY DAMAGED AND THE DAMAGED DECORATIONS WERE TAKEN AWAY. IT OBTAINED THE PRESENT LOOK AT PSEUDOGOTHICISM IN 1878-1886.
