  3. ourmisSion • It is the University’s mission to contribute to the creation of new knowledge through teaching, research and complimentary activities; to contribute to the humanistic, scientific, and professional formation of our students. Using knowledge acquired both inside and outside the classroom, students are inspired to be agents of change, for the development and improvement of society. • Our institution aims to reach both national and international development, and in accordance to the Will and Testament of its founder, Don Federico Santa MaríaCarrera, searches for academic excelence, placing special emphasis on facilitating admission and permanence of those who, having the aptitudes and attitudes demanded by academic work, don’t possess the economic resources necessary for pursuing higher education. Ourvision TO BE THE LEADING UNIVERSITY IN ENGINEERING, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN CHILE, AND TO BECOME INTERNATIONALLY RECOGINIZED AS SUCH.

  5. Six Axes of Strategic Vision for USM 2012 We will become an University which permanently develops long-term relationships with our alumni, which in turn will allow USM to know and engage them, generating opportunities for joint creation of value. Alumnilong-termrelationships 4

  6. Six Axes of Strategic Vision for USM 2012 We will consider welfare policies and instruments which are stable, modern and sustainable, which allow the worthy underprivileged to achieve the highest grade of knowledge. The University and its alumni community will count on scholarship and lending instruments, to give access to higher education to students that, having an outstanding academic performance, don’t possess the economic resources to achieve it. The University will impart to its students and alumni the solidarity spirit which Chile requires for its integral development, through our formation and testimony. Commitment to Solidarity 5

  10. How did the USM alumni employment issue became apparent? PROPUESTA DE VALOR Contextual aspects

  11. CONTEXT USM IS NOT LEADING IN JOB PLACEMENT STRATEGIES.

  12. Detectedinternalissues Isolated and uncoordinated efforts >> Informality in Job Placement Lack of recognition of the problem in several Departments (even other branches) [critical issue] Vague understanding of key information of alumni (and the enormous efforts to obtain it; hidden costs for USM in Academic Departments). Lack of formal statement of policies for tracking alumni. Lack of definitions at USM: What is understood as “professional success”? How will USM measure this? Up to which point the University is responsible? Weaknesses in technological platforms (USMEmpleo.cl) and human resources. [critical issue] Loss of job offers that arrive directly to Departments (USM employees, professors, secretaries, etc.) and lack of tracking of these. Limited budget for the USM Alumni Network. [critical issue]

  13. Solution: USM Job Placement Center General Objective: To create a center for institutional relations, permanent and sustainable in time with USM alumni, which empowers their employability levels, professional development and personal growth. The center would achieve this through modern process, activities and new technological platforms which actively support job placement, providing quantitative and qualitative information for the generation of institutional studies related to alumni and labor market needs.

  14. Solution: USM Job Placement Center Specific Objectives: Institutional and Strategic Fields • To generate information on job placement, professional career and wage behavior of alumni. Also, to identify the most valued professional skills by enterprises, which give quantifiable evidence for accreditation processes, and feedback to academic authorities (generate, measure and report the index). • Continuous improvement in job placement rates for USM alumni, across all careers. Strategic and Job Environment Contact fields • To strengthen and formalize USM work networks and the link between the University (Departments and Central Administration) and alumni, contributing to the coordination of a community which serves as professional and labor support; improving the employability indexes (alumni community + enterprises = networking). • Placing USM as an institution with tight “collaborative networks”.

  33. Work Subtopics Is the methodology used by USM adequate to the forthcoming challenges in the next accreditation process? What key elements should we consider? Opinions and advices concerning the presented strategy for USM in the context of linking and tracking alumni. Themes that should be worked upon in graduated surveys. Useful statistics. Potentiality and impact of graduated surveys. Improvement of data bases and research works.
