  3. About the Fellowship • Established in 2001 and continues on an annual basis • The W.T. Chan Fellowships commemorate Professor W.T. Chan, former Dean of Lingnan University and distinguished Professor of Chinese Philosophy and Religion. • The Fellowships extend the Foundation's commitment to higher education, increased international understanding, and personal growth. • "Education for Service" Linkages between academia and communities • Leadership, professional and personal development program through international exchange Lingnan Foundation

About the Fellowship (Cont.) • Service Learning • Each Fellow is placed in a NPO or NGO intern site based on the Fellow’s interest • Each intern site addresses a social concern • International understanding • Live with American families • Work in non-profit organizations, interact with American colleagues • Community service & outreach, interaction with local community members • “Buddy” System • Higher Education • Weekly seminars / classes • Mentors • Personal growth • English language enhancement • Professional development • Problem solving skills • Team building skills Lingnan Foundation

Eligibility • Lingnan University, Hong Kong: • All second year or third year undergraduate and first year postgraduatestudents from all majors are eligible to apply. • Sun Yat-sen University: • All second year or third year undergraduate and first year postgraduate students (excluding international students and students from Hong Kong or Macau) from all majors are eligible to apply. • Interested students must get approval from their faculties and submit the related application form All applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at Lingnan University or Sun Yat-sen University during 2013 - 2014. Application Form Guidelines Essays - Tips DO: • Research the program thoroughly before beginning your essays • Surf the program websites • Talk to former Chan Fellows • Read reports/essays and blogs by former Chan Fellows • Learn about the possible organizations in the US • Read up on the non-profit sector in the US and China • Think about and write down your goals for the half-year Fellowship • Write a list of why you want to be a Chan Fellow • Be sincere and honest • Write about your real passions and interests: let us learn more about you • Clear communication and simple writing is essential • Ask a friend to review and comment on your first draft. • Use the spell-check function! Application Form Guidelines Essays - Tips DON’T: • Forget the goals of the program and Lingnan Foundation • List your awards/experience, etc. that are already listed in the application (don’t repeat information!) • Write the essay on the night before the deadline • Write one sentence only saying that you want to be in the program so you can go to US and watch an NBA basketball match/do cultural exchange, etc. • No smiley faces or heart  ♥, etc. Be professional. • Copy others’ work or use long quotes from books/other sources • Leave the essay section blank and waste the opportunity to show the selection committee that you are an individual and real person.   20. Ask a professor, employer or professional contact who knows you well to write a recommendation letter for you, at least 3 weeks before the deadline . If your recommender does not know why you want to apply for the WT Chan Fellowship Program, spend some time to explain your goals and future plans.   25. Chan Fellows Alumni Association • In July 2012, former fellows of the W.T. CHAN Fellowships Program determined to establish WT CHAN Alumni Association. Fourteen former fellows formed an Executive Committee to help the daily operation of the Association. • Mission and objective • 1. To promote and support the Chan Fellowship Program of the Lingnan Foundation. • 2. To further the goals and objectives of the Chan Fellowship Program by supporting the fellows and alumni in organizing different events; social and academic gatherings. • 3. To accept, hold, invest, reinvest and administer any donations, and other benefits of any sort, without limitation as to the amount or value, and to use, disburse or donate the income or principal thereof for promotion and support of the Chan Fellowship Program and furthering the Fellowship goals and objectives. • Registration • The Association was successfully registered as a society at Hong Kong Police Licensing Office in Feb 2013.
