  2. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI REVIEW: Pro Tools GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE (GUI) displays operational information. The GUI displays how Pro Tools will PROGRAM the computer to carry out audio processing.

  5. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: A MULTITRACK Environment. • MIXING is a process of combining sounds. The Tracks have individual CHANNEL STRIPS, where each sound is controlled and processed. A Mixer is an Analog device that combines analog signals. Pro Tools – Virtual Mixer GUI.

  6. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Analog Mixers are familiar to most audio people. PT GUI controls are laid out on CHANNEL STRIPS similar to Analog Mixer architecture. Ease of use and allows experienced Mix Engineer to work quickly and creatively.

  7. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: 2 ways to View Mix Window: • Window Menu>Mix>Select • Keyboard Shortcut: Command + = This will ‘toggle’ between the Mix & Edit Windows

  9. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Mix Window has CHANNEL STRIPS. You select what you want to see in the Channels in the View Menu>Mix>Select. View Menu Icon next to the Show/Hide icon.

  10. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: CHANNEL STRIP: The audio signal path. Each channel usually contains a different audio signal.

  11. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Inserts Section: Where Plug-In’s are ‘Inserted’ into the Audio Path. Used to add real-time effects processing (EQ, Compression) to a track.

  12. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Sends Section: Auxiliary Sends are created to Route the Audio Signal to Internal Busses (Signal Paths). A Send has a level control, so it acts like a ‘Mixer’ within a Mixer. Used to ‘Send’ a signal to a Processor Input.

  13. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Input & Output Selectors: Used to route signals IN TO or OUT FROM the Channel (usually the audio interface) during recording and/or playback.

  14. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Automation Status:Used to Select the Mix Automation Mode that controls playback parameters of the Playlist.

  15. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Channel Group: Used to create Groups of selected Channels (or View those Groups) for Mixing and/or Editing Contents of the Playlist.

  17. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Fader Float Control: Clicking on this Control UNDOCKS the Fader, allowing you to ‘Float’ it over your Edit Window. You can visually reference your audio while you craft the mix.

  19. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Input Monitor: Selects between monitoring the Input or Recorded Signal when tracking (HD Only). Record Enable:ARMS (makes ready) the selected track for Recording. Solo Button:Allows operator to hear only the selected track. Primarily used to Audition (NOT MIX) the track. Mute Button:Allows operator to turn off (Mute) the Audio on that track.

  20. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Channel Fader: Adjusts the Output Level of an Audio Signal (on a track) during playback. Controls the ‘Loudness’ among/between Sounds.

  22. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Channel Meter: dB Full Scale meter set to PRE-Fader monitoring. Calibrated to 0dB at the top, VU Scale. The Numeric Volume Display shows the Fader position in dB VU.

  23. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Channel Type, Voice and Control Value Change Indicators: Displays the Type of Track (Audio) it’s Output Voice (Dynamic/Automatic) and when an Automatable Control Value has been changed. ACV Change Type Voice

  24. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Track Name: Rename your Tracks for UNIQUE IDENTIFICATION This becomes the NAME of the FILE that you record, so this is an Important Step! To do: Double Click on the Box

  25. Module 6.1Pro Tools Mix GUI The Mix Window: Comments Box: ‘Scratch Pad’ where you can enter info about the track. Comments are kept with the SESSION, not the recorded File. Used during tracking to note the mic, position, instrument, amp, player, etc.
