  2. What is Co-Op? Cooperative Education (Co-Op) internships create educational partnerships among Montana State University Billings, the business community, and students. It is a unique academic program that allows students to earn academic credit while combining classroom learning with practical work experience.

  3. Course Numbers & Credits HADM Internship Course Numbers Credit Hours 1 credit=45 hours of work 6 credits =270 hours of work 1 credit=160 hours of work or 6 credits=960 hours (Fall 07) The internship is a restricted-entry course. Co-Op Ed will register you for the course and seminar once all necessary and completed paperwork is submitted to Co-Op Ed in LI 100.

  4. Course Numbers & Credits HADM Internship Course Numbers Credit Hours 1 credit=160 hours of work 3 credits =480 hours of work Beginning in the Fall of 2007, hours of participation will change to reflect Health Administration industry standards.

  5. Steps to Obtain an InternshipStarting the Process… Contact Mandy Brottem, Cooperative Education Specialist, at 406.657.1717 or mbrottem@msubillings.edu to get started. Getting Started: • Register with Careerlink at https://www.myinterfase.com/msubillings/student/ • If you have registered in CareerLink, please edit your profile and make sure the “Miscellaneous Information” section is completed. • Upload your résumé in Career Link (to be critiqued by Career Services staff and then corrected) • Set up an initial appointment with Mandy, Co-Op Ed Specialist • For your initial appointment, bring a list of internships you are interested in pursuing from web site or your own list of possible sites. • If you have any questions regarding Career Link, Please call Jenna rakes at 657.2168

  6. Steps to Obtain an InternshipContinuing the process… Securing and internship: • Contact potential sites to set up interviews. You are responsible for pursuing internship leads. Getting Registered: • Contact your faculty supervisor for specific academic requirements. He/she will act as a mentor/supervisor throughout the Co-Op Experience. • Complete HADM packet and make required copies • If you developed your internship you must include your job description (Faculty supervisor must approve the position description.) • Complete the Learning Agreement, with signatures of employer, faculty, department chair, and Co-Op Ed. Steps to Obtain an InternshipCompleting the registration… The following must be submitted to Co-Op Ed prior to registration: • Registration in CareerLink • Updated Critiqued Résumé (uploaded in CareerLink) • HADM Internship Packet (Copy) • Job Description (if not obtained through Co-Op) • Complete & Signed Co-Op Ed Learning Agreement The last day to register for your internship is the “Last Day for Registering/Adding Classes” as determined by the University Calendar. Please plan accordingly.

HADM Requirements • HADM Internship Packet includes: • HADM student requirements, learning outcomes, mid-term and final HADM evaluation. • Make 3 copies of the complete HADM Internship Packet, and distribute as follows: • Original to Faculty Supervisor • 1 copy for your Agency Supervisor or organization • 1 copy for Co-Op Ed • 1 copy for yourself

  9. Sample HADM Internship Projects Substantive work experience adds new skills to your repertoire And résumé. It also adds to your academic and professional development. • Write a business plan. • Prepare purchasing specs for a major piece of equipment and interview vendors. • Write a guide for long term care facility residents. • Participate in a job analysis study or salary survey. • Assist with clinical trials. • Research and write a ‘white paper’ on state regulatory policy (e.g., medical malpractice insurance) • Collect data for an operating room time and motion study. • Participate in the development of a master plan for a major new hospital. • Visit clinics to observe patient wait times and waiting room experiences and write a report.

  10. Internships = Jobs! Just the Basics… • Dress professionally • Be on time • Be prepared • Practice good hygiene and good office etiquette. • Résumé, cover letter, and thank you note are key.  • The last day to register for your internship is the “Last Day for Registering/Adding Classes” as determined by the University Calendar. • Placements and documentation must be complete prior to registration. • Internship postings are available online, but you are free to develop your own. • Keep in mind that applying for an internship is similar to applying for a job.
