How Science Works • Publications are the money of science • It is money you print yourself • Unlike real money, when you spend it, you get to keep it • Sometimes when you spend it, the amount you keep gets bigger • You use it for real money from funding agencies • It’s fun • It’s a lot of work • It makes your brain hurt • Sometimes you print a lot of money but it is useless • If you use counterfeit money (plagiarism) you can never earn money the same way again

  3. Strategy • When choosing where to publish consider • What you have to say • Who you want to reach • Your time frame • CFP date, event date • How much money you have for travel • Who on your team should go where

Places to Publish • Journals • Open dates • Special Issues of journals • Cutoff dates • Conferences • CFP dates, meeting dates • Workshops • Often at conferences • More select audience • Less rigid criteria • Often follow on opportunities • Conference and Workshop pubs are often extended to become journal pubs • Some new info should be included

  5. Who we want to reach • AI • Agents • Deduction • E-commerce • Privacy • Security • Semantic Web • Software engineering • Web Services • Almost any Computer Science area

Travel Money and Bang for the Buck • RO’s • Two conf per year from group • More if you bring in money from contracts and licenses • Guest workers / Grad students • Nothing from group (well, maybe) • Look to NSERC funding • Conferences often offer grants to pay part • Guest workers who are not grad students • Will have own sources • International travel an option • look to North America first • Seek quality conferences, workshops • Look for organizers who are publish • Look at previous year’s papers • Talk to people
