  2. Number 1 • THEY COUNT! • Passing the High School Assessments (HSAs) is REQUIRED in order to receive a Maryland high school diploma beginning with the graduating class of 2009

  3. Number 2 • Students take the HSAs at the end of the class, not senior year. • The tests are end-of-course exams that your child takes at the completion of four core subjects – English 10, Government, Algebra and Biology

  4. Number 3 • Prepared students have brighter futures. • Today’s students must be prepared to compete for jobs in a global economy. • Jobs of tomorrow require high level knowledge and skills. HSAs help develop those skills.

  5. Number 4 • English HSA affects ALL 10th graders • Algebra, Biology, Government is given in which ever grade the course is taken, but the English course is given to every 10th grade student.

  6. Number 5 • The Assessments test what should be taught and learned in key subject areas. • The coursework is aligned with the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum which clearly outlines content, objectives, and skills.

  7. Number 6 • There are three ways to pass the HSA Option One • Passing scores: Algebra 412 Government 394 Biology 400 English 396

  8. Option 2 • The combined score option allows your child to offset lower performance on one test with higher performance on another. • Earn a combined score of at least 1602.

  9. Option 3 • The Bridge Plan – based on three premises Test performance: two or more unsuccessful attempts to earn at lease the passing score on one or more tests Assistance Particpation: participation in meaningful assistance such as mastery course, tutoring, after school program, online work Academic Progress Satisfactory grades and attendance

  10. Number 7 • The HSAs are not a one-shot deal. • If your child does not pass the HSA the first time it is taken, there will be four opportunities each year to do so –October, January, May, Summer. • Seniors have a special administration in April. • There must be remediation before we will allow a retest.

  11. May Administration • May 17 Biology • May 18 Government • May 20 Algebra/Data Analysis • May 21 English • Make ups May 24-27 and June 1-4

  12. Number 8 • Help is available for students. • There are many practice tests with answer keys that are available. • Online courses in Algebra and Government are available. • After school help is available for all assessed courses. We provide bus tokens for students who ride the bus to school. • Algebra help during lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. • HSA mastery courses can be taken for one semester.

  13. Number 9 • Help is available for parents. • Parents can access HSAexam.org.MSDE • This web site is created for parents to view sample HSA questions, learn how the test is scored, access the Voluntary State Curriculum and find people in MSDE who can answer your questions.
