Analog to Digital Conversion • Data: analog or digital • Analog data is continuous wave patterns of sound and light • Digital data is processed as bits (0s and 1s) • Music: analog in to digital storage to analog out • An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) converts analog to digital • A digital signal processor (DSP) compresses the data • A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) converts the data back to analog for output

Playing and Recording Music • Music can be created or performed using a synthesizer (creates sound from digital instructions) • The MIDI standard is used to represent music in digital form • A MIDI port connects the computer to an electronic instrument • The MIDI protocol is a series of messages that describe the action of a musical performance • Messages are saved in a MIDI file format • A sequencer is a program or device that records, processes, edits, and plays back MIDI data through a MIDI instrument or speaker

  4. Performing Music • Computer-controlled amplifiers and speakers output sound from instruments • Soundboard computers balance the sound and volume, and create special lighting and sound effects • Computer programs can help train performers (ex., Digital Conducting Feedback System)

Dance • Dance notation software captures movement as a series of symbols to provide a guide for staging • Choreographers use animation software packages to plan the movements of dancers, ex., LifeForms • Dancers use motion capture to analyze their dance movements and create virtual partners Dancers wear sensors which transmit data to a base station • Dancers electronically document a dance fully for future staging, ex., DanceForms

Sculpture and 3-D Media • Sculptors use CAD software to create a 3-D digital model to serve as a guide • 3-D scanning is used to scan an existing object and manipulate it with digital software • Uses a fine line of laser light across the surface • The Digital Michelangelo Project used a 3-D scanning system to archive the artist’s works • Computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling machines use the digital model as input to shape the desired medium • Telesculpture allows artists to collaborate on a work electronically

Graphics Arts & Animation • Computers are used to create graphics in a process called rendering • Illustration software allows you to render art with a mouse or graphic tablet • Fractal art can be created with graphic software • A fractal is a geometric pattern repeated at ever smaller (or larger) scales • Computer-generated fractals uses mathematical formulas to create art

Digital Photo Editing • Digital images can be edited with photo-editing software • Adjust contrast and brightness • Remove red-eye • Crop images • Remove or add elements • Add special effects • Remove blemishes and wrinkles • Ethical concerns have been raised about altering digital photos for news magazines and newspapers

Digital Video Editing • Video editing software allows you to edit digital video • Automatically splits the video into smaller, more manageable scenes • Allows you to cut out, or prune, unwanted parts, edit individual scenes, and add titles or logos • Morphing is a special effect in which one image is transformed into another over several frames

Digital Video Editing, 2 • Video composition is the process of integrating two or more elements into one complete scene • Used to integrate special effects • Can use a blue or green screen technique to film the subject (and digitally fill in the background later) • Audio effects can be added using video editing software • Finished scenes are combined into a complete video by adding transitional effects between scenes

Digital Video Editing, 3 • Black-and-white movies can be colorized much faster with video editing software • The old film is scanned into the computer to create a digital version • A process called interpolation involves manually coloring key frames; the computer uses algorithms to determine colors for the other framesand automatically fills the colors in • The same ethical concerns arise with digital video as with digital photos

Computer Animation • In 3-D animation, every object in a scene has to be sculpted in 3-D to form a wireframe model • Skin, hair, and other textures are mapped onto the wireframe • The software generates an image and adds final effects • The images are placed in an animation sequence • Key frame animation focuses on the key frames in an animation sequence • The animation software program computes the positions between the top and bottom of the sequence in a process called tweening
