  1. The NewPhysical Sciences Complex A state-of-the-art center for cutting-edge research in some of the most exciting & promisingareas of science: • Condensed Matter Science (including Quantum- Computing & Nano-technology) • Astronomy & Space Physics • Elementary & High Energy Particles • Atomic, Molecular & Optical Physics • Nonlinear Dynamics & Chaos • Astro- & Nuclear Physics … and much more.

  2. The NewPhysical Sciences Complex • A home for world-class physical science collaborations involving top scientists from academia, industry, NSF, NASA, NIST, DoE, NRL, LPS, and other labs. • On the campus of the only top research university within the D.C. Beltway The University of Maryland

  3. World-Class Science & Facilities • Once built, the complex will provide space and tools to match some of the best minds in the nation. Physics Professor and Nobel Laureate, William Phillips; Toll Professor James Gates; and the highest concentration (11 of the 29) of Distinguished University Professors on campus, including Michael Fisher and Ellen Williams.

  4. Economic Impact • This $185 million investment has the potential to reap truly significant and continuing benefits for the campus, county, State and nation. • By helping to attract top new faculty and research projects to Maryland, the facility will increase research collaboration and spending, from government and corporate partners. • Collaborative efforts with NASA-Goddard, NSF, NIST and others promise to expand opportunities for residents and businesses in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and also providing a home for collaboration with scientists throughout the nation.

  5. The Vision • Building on Maryland’s world-class physical science programs, the new complex will be a state-of-the-art facility and regional center for students and faculty to collaborate with other university, government and industry scientists on many of the fundamental questions in science today.

  6. The Physical Sciences Complex • An integrated complex of buildings • On top of a state-of-the-art underground system of laboratories • An auditorium wing with modern/inspiring architecture • A soaring office and library tower, and a complex of underground labs and offices • For undergraduates and public lectures the complex will include four new world-class auditoria, classrooms, and adaptable, first-floor lab space

  7. The Physical Sciences Complex • World-Class Underground Laboratories with clean and reliable, research grade power and multi-purpose environmental and vibration controls. • Top-notch Classrooms and Teaching Labs with wireless networks and state-of-the-art video and lecture demonstration facilities.

  8. The Current Facts • Maryland’s Departments of Physics, Astronomy and the Institute for Physical Sciences and Technology are among the top programs in the nation. • The physical separation of faculty, in numerous buildings across campus, presently hinders their collaborative interactions. • New fields and strong research groups in AMO, Nanotech and Cosmology require more space.

  9. The Bottom-line • To attract and keep more top faculty and students Maryland’s top programs need a new, state-of-the-art Physical Science Complex. • Other top national research universities have, or are currently building new cutting-edge physical science facilities. • For example, comparable physics departments already have newer buildings with 1/3 more space per faculty member than Maryland.

  10. The Current Physics Building The Physics Building just after completion in 1950 The Physics building in 1967 before the addition of the lecture halls The building still has fuses in many places and was designed without provisions for central air conditioning
