  2. Project This project compares two upland soils within Leon County, Florida Both soils are in similar upland pine habitats, however they are separated by approximately 12 miles and millions of years of geologic formation. Soil 1 Soil 2 Leon County, Florida

  3. Background of Tallahassee • Tallahassee, FL is basically divided in half (north/south) along a geologic terrace formed millions of years ago. The elevation in the north half (soil 1) is approximately 230 ft while the elevation for south half (soil 2) is approximately 40 ft. • This project compares two uplands soils in Leon County, FL approximately 12 miles apart but almost 200 ft difference in elevation.

Soil 1 Soil Description Form A horizon: Lower Depth of Boundary = 5 in, Clear Boundary, sandy loam texture, single grain, weak structure with loose consistency BA horizon: Lower Depth of Boundary = 9 in, Gradual Boundary, sandy loam texture, single grain, moderate structure with very friable consistency Bt2 horizon: Lower Depth of Boundary = >53 in, Diffuse Boundary, sandy clay loam texture, moderate structure with friable consistency Bt1 horizon: Lower Depth of Boundary = 21 in, Diffuse Boundary, sandy clay loam texture, moderate structure with friable consistency

  13. Comparison • Soil 1 has a much higher clay content than Soil 2 • Very similar canopy, subcanopy, shrub and ground cover • Very similar management (Prescribed Fire) • Soil 1 – Orangeburg Sand • Soil 2 – Kershaw Sand
