Project Matahari (1) • 5 of the 2T2 students are assigned to the project, as shown at the foot of this page. • Mr Ooi and Mr Mak are their mentors. • Various ideas have been discussed, including the visit to Old People’s Homes, Childcare Centre, help to needy schoolmates, etc. • Finally decided to see what we can do for the Bukit Batok Nature Park, which is quite near to our School. Preliminary Visit At around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 9th April 2008, Mr. Ooi, Mr. Mak and the group leader Benaiah Gabriel went to see the Officer in Charge, namely Ms Ng Kim Yan, of the Bukit Batok Nature Park. The Schedule We have to get more students to participate in the planting of shrubs, otherwise 5 students cannot do much. After some efforts we succeeded in getting the whole class of 1N3 and 3N2 to join, because the students of these 2 classes need to be involved in CIP. We chose a day at the end of Term 2 --- 22nd May 2008.
At about 3 pm, our students arrivedthe destination, welcome by Ms Ng.

Ms Ng and Mr Goh were demonstratinghow to bury the roots of the plant
1 month later, the “lemon grass” and “pandan leaf” that the YI students planted on the two plots of land are growing well, as shown below: Picture taken on 24th June 2008
In this video clip, you can see Ms Ng and Mr Goh teaching the YI students how to plant the “pandan leaf” into the soil. Our students have learnt some techniques, and at the same time contributed to the community.
Appendix --- some information about the Nature Park The Park is open all day long, and from 7 pm to 7 am the lights are on for illumination. In the morning there are a lot of residents having activities in the Park, such as Tai Zi, Swords class, jogging, etc. In the afternoon not many people are making use of the Park. In the evenings, many people go there after their work. There are only 4 workers from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm mainly for cleaning work, and this number is far from being sufficient as the Park is so large. From time to time they hope that additonal work force is available to help. For example, cleaning of their stone benches which are not accessable by vehicles, fallen leaves far away from the paths and such leaves may lead to mosquito breeding. We understand that we have limited time and manpower, so we cannot promise to help in such works. Other works such as pruning of trees, keeping up of the landscape, electrical maintenance, etc., are undertaken by a long term contractor.

About the Community • Simei Care Centre (SCC) is a rehablitation centre that caters to the needs for persons who have recovered from psychiatric illness. • The centre provides necessary rehabilitation services and strives to extend a conducive and caring environment thereby helping the clients with their recovery process & integration with the family and the society.
What is Psychiatric illness? Psychiatric illness is characterized by impairment of • Ability to think clearly & respond emotionally • Effective communication, understanding reality and behaving rationally
Project Objectives • To serve the community • To develop students through this project experience • Enhanced Self-confidence of the students • Students able to work as teams • Have strong convictions about their roles and obligations towards the community • Possess a strong Singaporean heartbeat and a better appreciation of the needs of the unfortunate people • Students can think critically by creating opportunities for them to reflect on their experience.

First Visit Objective • To get familiar with the community and know their service needs
First Visit Asst Director Mr Francis Goo gave an insight into ‘what is psychiatric illness’ and presented the centre’s programmes, facilities and services The YISS Project Team was given a tour of the centre’s various facilities
Second Visit Objective • To interact with the residents, befriend them and teach them how to make picture cards and greeting cards
Third Visit Objective • To bring some joy to the residents through games and dance items • To meet the staff and counselors of the centre for a panel discussion and to listen to what challenges they face and how they are motivated for this noble service
Our Reflection The NE programme of community care project enabled the students to understand • the needs of people recovering from psychiatric illness • how the centre helps them with care and services to get back to normal life • how we can help such unfortunate people with similar illness in the society around us • and appreciate such care givers and service providers
