  3. Bio • Born in Bordeaux, France • Got his first flute lesson from his father at 9 years old • Proficient by 10 • Paris Conservatory at 14 • won premier prix in flute performance by 16 • won premier prix in composition by 18

  5. Boehm flute • Theobald Boehm • 1794-1881 • Made his own flute • At age 18 proficient • University of Munich • New flute first displayed in 1851 at the London Exhibition

  6. Taffanel liked the new flute and wanted to experiment with it himself • Not very many people agreed with the changes, and often • New design= new muscle memory

  8. Technique Book • 17 Grands Exercises Jounaliers de Mecanisme pour Flute • Focuses on technique • Helped with establishing new muscle memory • Many teacher use this book; other woodwind players tend to use this book sometimes too
