  1. Identifying the Subject and Verb of A Sentence and Understanding the Difference Between Singular and Plural

  2. How to find the subject and the verb of a sentence: • To find the subject and verb of a sentence . . . • First find the verb (or action word!) • Ex: walk, ran, jump… • Then, ask yourself who or what is doing the verb. THAT is the subject of the sentence. • Ex: Mike talked to John. (talked is the verb and Mike is the one who talked, so Mike is the subject.)

  3. On a sheet of paper, write out the following five sentences. Circle the subject and underline the verb in each sentence. (If you need help, reference the previous slide!) • Ms. Webb is typing on the computer. • Logan asked Ms. Whitehead a question. • Jamie ran in the race on Sunday. • Mrs. Schwarze rode her horse around the farm. • The dog barked loudly at the mailman. **Reminder: the verb is what is being done. The subject is who or what is doing the verb!

  4. Singular and plural subjects • When something is SINGULAR, there is ONLY ONE. • Example: cat is singular because there is only one cat. • When something is PLURAL, there is MORE THAN ONE. • Example: cats is plural because there are more than one cat. 6. How did the singular word change to make it a plural word?? (Write this down as part of your HW!)

  5. Singular or plural?? • On the back of your HW paper, list all of the plural subjects on one side and all of the singular subjects on the other.

  6. Singular and plural verbs • Singular verbs GET AN S!!! • Plural verbs DON’T GET AN S!!! 7. How is this different from singular and plural subjects?? (Write this down as part of your HW!)

  7. Singular or plural?? • On the same sheet of paper, under your lists of singular and plural subjects, list all of the plural verbs on one side and all of the singular verbs on the other.
