  3. The U.S. Enters • Two main reasons: • May 1915, sinking of the Lusitania (British) by German submarine120 Americans aboard perished • Zimmerman telegramGermany offers Mexico western U.S. in return for attacking the U.S.

  4. Triple Entente and Diplomacy • Neutral Italy entered the war against Central Powers in 1915 • Promised German and Turkish territories • Arabs and Jews in Palestine were promised autonomy from the Turks to support the Allies • Eastern Europeans were promised ethnic control

Germany gambles in 1918 • With the U.S. mobilizing, Germany poured all troops into Western front. • March 1918 German armies reached the Marne River, threatening Paris • Germany lacked manpower and supplies to capitalize • By summer of 1918, U.S. reinforced Entente troops in France • By August, Germany began to retreat

  7. Transporting the Army • The American Expeditionary Force (AEF) was sent to France in 1917 • Gen. John J. Pershing commanded 2 million U.S. troops • The Service of Supply built warehouses, laid miles of railroad, and erected telegraph lines

American Operations • July 15, 1918 U.S. troops defeated the Germans at Second Battle of the Marne • Allied soldiers were successful at Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel, and Soissone • Nov. 9 Kaiser Wilhelm fled to Holland • Nov. 11, 1918 an armistice was signed ending WWI by Prince Max von Baden, leader of new gov’t
