Part one • Name the 6Rs and explain what each one means • Understand developments in technology and innovation regarding plastics pollution • Discover how recent policy has been proposed and enacted relating to plastics pollution • Reflect on how they can make a difference • Work collaboratively to plan a plastics campaign

  4. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one The 6Rs: Reduce Consumers Reduce the number of products they buy or consider buying products which use less energy. Manufactures Design products which use less materials, use less energy to produce and use less packaging during transport. Retailers Reduce carbon emissions by transporting straight to consumers rather than to warehouses and shops.

  5. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one The 6Rs: Recycle Consumers Ensure all products that can be recycled are disposed of in the correct way. Choose retailers that support recycling. Manufactures Design products that use recycled materials or ensure their products are recyclable. Retailers Ensure all products that can be recycled are disposed of in the correct way. Sell or donate products they no longer use themselves. Manufactures Consider how a product can be dismantled at the end of its life so the parts may be reused. Retailers Utilise facilities which reuse cardboard and plastic packaging.

  7. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one The 6Rs: Refuse Consumers Refuse products that are inefficient, in use or use of materials. Refuse products if the packaging creates too much waste. Manufactures and retailers Consider how the consumer will react to their products; will they refuse them?

  8. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one The 6Rs: Rethink Consumers Ask yourself “Do I really need this product?” Manufactures Design products that do the same job more efficiently. Retailers Choose packaging that is easier to recycle.

  9. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one The 6Rs: Repair Consumers Repair items such as clothing and furniture rather than replacing when damaged. Manufactures Design products which can be repaired, replacing part of a product rather than the whole thing. Retailers Choose manufacturers who facilitate repairing goods rather than replacing.

  10. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one Precycling Delay recycling for as long as possible. Consider some of the other Rs before deciding to dispose of the product. Precycling reduces the need to recycle. A product may have many different uses with more than one consumer / owner. How could you do the 6Rs more often?

  12. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one Current legislation: Plastic bags The law in England requires large shops (with more than 250 employees) to charge 5p for all single-use plastic carrier bags as of October 2015. Is it enough?

  13. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one Current legislation: Microbeads A complete ban on the sale of products containing microbeads (tiny pieces of plastic often added to products such as face scrubs, soaps and toothpastes) came into force in England and Scotland in 2018. Is it enough?

Part one Current legislation: Plastics straws, drink stirrers and cotton buds The UK government intends to introduce a ban on the distribution and sale of these items, coming into effect between October 2019 and October 2020, however this is still under consultation. Is it enough?

  15. Lesson 7: What can I do? Part one How can I make a difference? Over the next __ weeks you will be running a campaign to reduce the amount of plastic used in your school community. Working in groups your task is to change the attitude and / or behavior of your community.

You could have a prize for the year group that uses the most reusable plastics in their lunch boxes. You could challenge individuals to change their plastic use.
