What is IHE? • IHE is an initiative to solve real-world integration problems between HIS, RIS, PACS, Modalities, Printers, etc. • IHE is users’ driven & involves active vendor participation. • IHE is based on existing standards, HL7, DICOM, IETF, and others as it expands. • IHE is not a product itself, it specifies network transactions between systems. • IHE specifies only integration features. IHE-Methodology

What IHE is not ! • It is not a standardization project, although it turns good standards into practical reality. • It is not a vendor driven initiative nor a user driven initiative, it a joint user/vendor initiative. • It is not a place to issue "IHE Compliance Certificates". Vendor shall remain ultimately responsible to meet their customer needs. • It is an interoperability testing (tools & process). Products issue "IHE Integration Statements" • It is not a "call for tender" for a product, although it greatly simplifies the interface chapter of RFPs. IHE-Methodology

The IHE Vision for User Sponsors Promotion Education Integrated Product • Host/Encourage Vendors' involvement in IHE. • Educate users: They are part of an Healthcare Enterprise that expects teamwork from them (e.g. Radiology and IT). • Educate users: IHE standardizes a flexible workflow that can be customized (and may differ form current habits) • Educate Users: Standards are good. The IHE Technical Approach • Identify the transactions required to integrate the information flow between several information systems/devices • For each transaction, select a single standard (e.g.HL7 messages) for use in implementing the transaction • Specify in detail the use of the standard in implementing the transaction IHE-Methodology
