  1. First week in Ordinary Time BACKGROUND: This weekend we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the official end of the Christmas Season. Next Sunday we celebrate PEACE SUNDAY. The Bishops of England and Wales invite us to keep this day as a day of prayer for world peace and to take up the theme offered by Pope Benedict XVI: “Blessed are the Peacemakers” In this Year of Faith where we celebrate the Second Vatican Council, we remember that the Bishops who metduring 1962-65 had lived through the horrors of World War II and the shadow of the Cold War hung over relations between the East & West. Yet despite this they emphasised that God’s love can renew all things, that God’s will is a universal peace in which all are called to share and that humanity can be trusted to build a peaceful and just society, (Lumen Gentium13) See Pax Christi web-site for more resources: www.paxchristi.org.uk Our prayers this week are from Pax Christi

  2. We will begin by making the sign of the Cross Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen We pause to think of any special intention we want to pray for today. We light our Form Candle for all our prayers today.

  3. Monday 14th January Reader: “After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he had proclaimed the Good News from God. ‘The time has come’ he said ‘and the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.’ (Mark 1:14-15) Together we pray: All: Lord, may we be gifted by the Spirit with the imagination, the words and the gestures which can bring peace where there is none. Help us to begin with our school community. Amen

  4. Tuesday 15th January Reader: “Jesus and his disciples went as far as Capernaum, and as soon as the Sabbath came he went to the synagogue and began to teach. And his teaching, made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them with authority.” (Mark 1:21-22) Together we pray: All: Lord, in this ‘Year of Faith’, may the Church be renewed in its service of the Gospel. May we be preachers of peace and effective signs of God’s healing love in the world. Amen

  5. Wednesday 16th January Reader: “On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went with James & John straight to the house of Simon & Andrew. Now Simon’s mother-in-law had gone to bed with a fever, and they told him about her straightaway. He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them.” (Mark 1:29-30) Together we pray: All: Lord we pray for peace in Jerusalem and for all the people of the Holy Land: that the wounds of hatred and division may be healed and that Jerusalem may be truly a ‘City of Peace’ for all. Amen

  6. Thursday 17th January – St Anthony of Egypt Reader:St Antony of Egypt he gave up everything he owned and went to live in the desert, so that he could pray without distraction. He is patron of all monks who live in monasteries. You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. Psalm 16 Together we pray: All: We pray for all who work for peace and justice; for all who try to be prophets and take risks for peace. We ask God’s blessing today especially on the work of the international Catholic peace movement, Pax Christi. Amen Reader:We stop in silence to pray for the monks of Mount St Bernard Abbey, near to Coalville in Leicestershire (pause) Lord in you mercy. All: Hear our prayer

Friday 18th January Reader: “The things we have heard and understood, the things our ancestors have taught us, we will not hide from their children, but will tell them to the next generation; the glories of the Lord and his might and the marvellous deeds he has done.” (Psalm 77:3-4) Together we pray: All: Lord God, you grant us true freedom, freedom of heart, that we might praise you and serve our brothers and sisters in their need. Heal our divisions and hear these, our prayers, which we make through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

  8. School Prayer Prayer of Saint Benedict We pray Lord, that everything we do may be prompted by your inspiration, so that every prayer and work of ours may begin from you, and be brought by you to completion. Amen Saint Benedict – Pray for us
