  2. Nutrition • The study of how your bodies use the substances in food to maintain our health Affects your everyday tasks Helps you grow and repair your body Food affects feelings: Hunger peoples eating habits are affected when they are sad, happy, and nervous

Nutrition • Digestion- is the process in which food is broken down into a form your body can use • Nutrients- are the substances found in food that your body needs to function properly. • Your body makes some but most come from food • Metabolism- the process of turning nutrients into usable energy.

  4. Nutrition • Diet- is a pattern of eating • Not always about losing weight • Diet includes: when your eat, what you eat, how much you eat. • Many factors affect diet, one for example is food choices

  5. Food choices • There are 6 factors that affect food choices: • Your personal taste • Family traditions • Convenience of foods • Overall cost of food • Foods your friends eat • Availability of foods in your area

  6. Nutrients • 6 essential nutrients: • Fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water • Fats, proteins, and carbohydrates are used for energy • Vitamins and minerals control bodily functions • Water controls temperature and is a transportation system.

  7. Carbohydrates • Chemical composed of one or more simple sugars • Can be sugar or starch • Starches are many simple sugars • Fiber is carb that cannot be broken down • 1 gram of carbs is 4 calories

Fats • Nutrients that store energy and store vitamins • Can be found in solid or liquid • Makes food taste better • Contains more calories than any nutrient, 1 gram of fat is 9 calories. • Eating foods high in fat will put more calories in the body then needed, these extra calories are stored as fat • Fat can block flow to the heart

  9. Proteins • Nutrients that are used for building, maintaining, and repairing tissues and cells. • Help make food into energy • Meats and poultry good forms of protein • 1 gram of protein is 4 calories

Vitamins and minerals • Vitamins- organic compounds that control many body functions • Minerals- elements that are essential for good health. • Can be found in all grown products • Each vitamin and mineral has a certain function • For example vitamin A helps with vision, and the mineral calcium helps build bones.

  11. Water No energy from water Can live for several weeks without food, but without water a person can only live a few days Is used to fill spaces in the body, and lubricate and transport Regulates body temperature Drink water
