  2. Base plate and occlusal rims • One of first steps in construction of dentures • Base plate-represents body of denture • Occlusal rim-wax block. Used by lab technician to place denture teeth

  3. Steps • The teeth are articulated in the lab, tested in the patient’s mouth-final fittings completed • Last step-construction of dentures: • Investment or covering of rims • Wax is replaced by acrylic-forms denture base

  6. Lab Activity • 1. Prepare edentulous model • Use marker or pencil to mark around area where denture will fit • Sprinkle model with baby powder • 2. Soften a half sheet of baseplate wax with alcohol torch • Using gloved fingers press wax onto form • 3. Trim excess wax with a lab knife or scalpel • 1/6 to ¼ inch around mucobuccal fold area

  7. Lab continued • 4. Contour wax into mucobuccal fold-pressing against plate and conforming to pencil line • Use a pencil eraser • Do not tear wax
