### Prime Time 1.2: Playing to Win the Factor Game

• Goals:

• Classify numbers as prime or composite

• Recognize that some numbers are rich in factors, while others have few factors

• Review multiplication facts

• Define:

• Prime number

• Composite number

• Abundant number

• Perfect number

• Deficient number

• Thinking about the best first move in the Factor Game makes me wonder what the results would be for each number if I chose it as my first move. What if I chose 1 or 2 or 3? How many points would I get? How many points would my opponent get?

• Let’s find the results for every possible first move. Can you think of a way that we can organize our work so that we can see patterns and determine which moves are good and which moves are bad?

• What strategy can you use to make sure you have found all the factors of a number without missing any?

• Make a table of all possible first moves

• List all the proper factors of the numbers

• What pattern do you see?

• What is the best move? Why?

• Which first move would you lose a turn?

• What is the next worst move?

• List all the first moves that allow your opponent to score only one point.

• These numbers are called prime numbers.

• Are all the prime numbers good first moves?

• List all the first moves that allow your opponent to score more than one point. These numbers are called composite numbers.

• Are composite numbers good first moves?
