Originally, the element was going to be named Kurchatovium (symbol Ku) in honor of Igor Kurchatov, a Soviet pioneer in nuclear physics. In 1969, an American research team based in Berkeley, California had been able to identify at least two isotopes of element 104 from the one identified by the Soviet team. The American team suggested to name the element Rutherfordium in honor of the British physicist Lord Ernest Rutherford. In 1992, an international committee decided that the American and Soviet labs should share credit for the discovery.
