  1. Nebraska Transmission Issues for Wind Interconnection Paul Malone Transmission Compliance & Planning Manager Nebraska Public Power District

  2. Understanding Nebraska’s Transmission System • Nebraska Transmission System is part of the Eastern Interconnection • Transmission System is a Network • Compliance with North American Electric Reliability (NERC) standards for planning & operating the system • The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) will conduct transmission studies for Interconnection of generation to NPPD, OPPD and LES system

  3. Nebraska Transmission Issues • Limited transmission capacity in existing system • Western Nebraska extremely limited • Can interconnect additional wind generation to serve Nebraska customers without extensive transmission expansion • But extensive transmission expansion required for large scale wind development • Thousands of MWs requires hundreds of millions $ in transmission investment • Wind developers that want to interconnect in Nebraska to the NPPD, OPPD or LES transmission system can do so by: • Submitting an Interconnection Request to SPP • Paying for the transmission studies • Signing an Interconnection Agreement • Paying for the transmission upgrades

  4. Nebraska Transmission System

  5. New Project to Strengthen Interconnection from Nebraska to SPP
