  3. GIS Focus Content GIS Project • Vision • To provide service excellence through a “one stop shop” using leading edge spatial technology, best practices and processes to integrate all GPG Department GIS systems on a centrally shared platform (SIMS). • Slogan • One Province, One GIS

The Centralised GIS Content GIS Project GIS Objectives • The objective of this project is to consolidate all current GIS applications in the province and provide one centrally accessible robust technology solution. The proposed GIS solution will serve as the key spatial data business intelligence gathering tool for the GPG and would need to support project and other decision making in departments. • Key Outcomes: • Elimination of duplication; • One stop real time platform for spatial information; and • Spatial database that allows the storing, referencing and compilation of knowledge capital; • Increased automation.

  6. Content GIS Project • Imagery coverage of Gauteng pre 2005 is sporadic and difficult to plan from • Result was a provincial investment into a wall to wall quickbird satellite image coverage of the province at 60cm resolution and distributed under a multi government license

Content GIS Project Applications and end users • Housing (Informal Settlement Monitoring, land availability assessments) • Agriculture Conservation and Environment (monitoring natural resources, urban growth, land use and input to Gauteng environmental atlas) • Health (Identification and optimization of mobile clinics and access) • Education (asset management, poverty indicators, audits) • Public Transport, Roads and Works (planning, road network update) • Sports and Recreation (cricket world cup, 2010 planning) • Community safety (I3S, risk assessment) • Municipalities (property evaluation roll)

Content GIS Project • Success in the broad utilisation of the 2004/5 image mosaic has resulted in Gauteng Public Transport Roads and Works contracting CSIR SAC to provide 2 new 60cm coverages for 2007 and 2008 • This will include an infra-red band, and several value added products including annual urban change maps, vector road updates, 1:10 000 scale land cover and a dwelling inventory Dwelling Inventory 1:10 000 scale Land Cover 1996 – 2001 urban change map for gauteng Vector road update (cosmo city) 60cm infra red image (Gauteng)
