  1. Single Digit Whole Number AdditionFlashCards

  2. The Whole Numbers are the natural numbers (1, 2, 3, …), and the number zero (0).

  3. When we add zero (0) to any number, the result (sum) is the number that zero was added to, regardless as to whether zero was added to the original number before it, or after it. The rule reads: 0 + a = a or a + 0 = a So 0 + 9 = 9 and 4 + 0 = 4

  4. When we add two numbers, the order doesn’t matter; that is, the sum (result) is the same. The rule (of Commutivity for Addition) states: a + b = b + a Just as 3 + 5 = 8, it is also true that 5 + 3 = 8 .

  5. You may have remembered being asked to memorize whole number addition facts in grade school. The next slide is a table of sums of whole numbers (the natural numbers : { 1 , 2, ,3 , … } and zero)…

  6. To use this table, simply take any number in the top row and any number in the first column, and their sum can be found where that row and column intersect. • Notice that the sum : 5 + 7 = 12 can be found by using the above mentioned process to the table… see next slide…

  7. The next 55 slides will be randomly mixed “flash cards” for adding single digit whole numbers, which drills & practices the facts from the addition table we just reviewed. The answers will be revealed (UPSIDE DOWN) two seconds after the “flash card” pops up • Use the “NEXT” button (below on the right) to get more “flash cards”. • If you wish to end the session, use the “END” button (below on the left)
